I hear that all the time on this website. I never enjoyed hearing it or reading it, I suppose because it insinuated that once you are a smoker, you're always a smoker. That you would never be free from the addiction. I started thinking about this particular phrase last night. I thought about how before my son was born I quit smoking for 2 years. What was it that made me start again?? That quit was easy, my husband and I decided to just quit. Sick of spending the money. We quit cold turkey. Didn't look back. We could feel our health improve which motivated us to stay the course. We could see the money we were saving from not smoking. It was at this time we decided after being married for 4 years we would starting trying to have a child. Within a month, we were pregnant. I never thought about smoking when I had that growing body inside me-I was a non-smoker. My son was born and we were happy! Then it was time to invest in our first home. We started the process, found a home we fell in love with, was approved for the loan, everything was in place. Our son was 3 months old. We seemed to be on the right track! THEN BOOM - IT HIT!! I lost my job!! My husband didn't make enough to get the loan approved on his own - we were stuck! In jeopardy of losing the house we loved, not to mention in shock from losing 1/2 our income. My husband didn't say a word that day, just hopped in his truck, stopped at the convenience store, bought a pack of cigarettes and had two slammed before he got back home! I could smell the smoke on him the minute he walked in. THAT is when I LET MY GUARD DOWN!! I hadn't thought about smoking up until that moment! I didn't think twice - I grabbed a cigarette and lit up! I was a SMOKER again! It was ME not my ex-husband that started the addiction up again! So - although I hated hearing that phrase...how true it is!! It really doesn't matter how long you've quit - it only takes a split second to start again! To all my friends struggling -- Be Strong!!! Never Let Your Guard Down!! Guard Your QUIT ALWAYS!!!
