Preparation - Need help!

Hey, everyone!  This is my first day on this site and I've begun to set up my quit plan.  To give a little history, I have been smoking for almost exactly 8 years, and have had 2 semi-successful quit attempts, one for 3 months, another for nearly 9 months.  I want to quit because of potential health risks and because I want to start a family in the next couple of years and want to be completely smoke-free before I begin that endeavor.

Like many smokers, I am pretty anxious about this whole process.  We are coming up on the holiday season, which is a very stressful time where I work, so I am thinking about a quit date after that because I am so fearful I will just be setting myself up for failure.  I have been trying to research different products and methods.  I have tried nicotine gum and Chantix in the past (both my previous quit attempts were cold turkey).  The gum did not seem to be helping as much as I wanted, and the side effects of Chantix I experienced (extreme nausea), were enough to make me stop taking the medication.  I noticed on here one of the videos suggested using multiple stop smoking products.  What are some successful combinations people have found on here?

I really want this time to be the time I stick with it, although I realize it may take several attempts within the big attempt to fully quit.  Your success stories are so motivating!!!

Hi Danielle and welcome to the site. So glad you made the decision to quit, it's the healthiest one you'll ever make. Pretty much you have to do what is good for you. Everyone is different. Only you know what is best for you. Try one aid or as many as it takes to assist you in quitting. I found the biggest and best thing is a good positive attitude about quitting. I learned and am still learning all I can about nicotine addiction so I have a good back-up system for moments of smoking memories and/or triggers. It's relearning how to live without the cigarette. As hard as we all think that might be, it's not hard at all. I hope to see you around, often!

Hi Danielle! Congrats on your decision to quit forever this time!

I quit cold Turkey because I decided to just get the nicotine out of my system ASAP to get it overwith! Other people have been successful with other methods. No matter which method you choose, remember it is YOU that chooses to smoke or NOT! You have to make that decision and stick with it no matter what! Smoking cannot be an option anymore for ANY reason.

Hey Danielle, smoking aid are good in assisting you.  But nothing will help you more than you're determination and mindset.  So use the aids that work best for you and do all the reading you can to understand what your body has been through and why it is addicted and why we really smoke.  One day at a time.  You can do this 🙂

Hi Danielle, you are definately in the right spot.  The reading is critical.  Understanding the addiction and the withdrawal makes it much easier to deal with, increasing greatly your comfort in your quit.  Support is also critical, quitting is an event that needs to become a process to maintain your success.  This site will help you.  More important that anything is for you to commit to your decision and have faith that you can do this, the reading becomes critical here.  Do the reading and you will understand that success is in your reach. You can absolutely do this!  You are making a great investment in your future!  So glad that you are here.  Regards, Lisa

Like all the intelligent folks above me, I'll chime in with read, read READ!!! Did I mention read??

We make a commitment to ourselves, with courage and fortitude and determination...we will not harm our bodies any longer by smoking.

It doesn't matter the circumstance. The holiday. The work schedule. The kids being kids. The spouse being unsupportive. Juggling finances.

No situation will make you smoke because you are a non-smoker. Period. And think: what do non-smokers do when they experience stress? Loss? Fear? Pain?

N.O.P.E.

Did I mention: READ!
