Anybody had to dose their cat with liquid Metronidazole? Just did it with one of ours and she foamed at the mouth, fought tooth and nail and it was a lousy experience all the way around. And I'm supposed to do this for ten days. OMG!

Yikes! I didn't even know they gave Flagyl to cats! Sounds like the foaming is a side effect from it tasting so awful:
Maybe ask your vet about Tiny Tabs: Metronidazole Tiny Tabs, Wedgewood Pet Rx
I had to give my one cat liquid antibiotics and it was such a terrible experience for him and us, that from then on I requested either a shot or a pill. At least with a pill I was able to use a pill pocket or hide in some tuna. Trying to get a liquid down with that dropper was just ridiculous.
My Irish Setter used to do the foaming mouth trick if his Heartworm medicine came out of the braunsweiger (sic) ball!
I think the idea is to put the dropper in the side of the mouth. But - after the first dose, I never found a way - and still have some scars to prove it! My cat friend used to wrap them in a towel and kneel with them in between her legs and literally SIT on them to give them medication. Ah, no!
Sorry - I like the suggestion to get it in pill form and then you can try to hide it in something they like.
Good luck!!!

Giulia I specifically requested pills for Bijou and she is getting FIVE a day for now, it is so much easier to dose and to make sure she really got the medication, after today, she is down to 1 a day!! Liquids are difficult to give to cats...I am so sorry...I have had cats who fought me tooth and nail over any medications...Binx (our other cat) fights like a wildcat if he is given meds...he knocked me off the bed last year and took the television with me, I was black and blue from the shoulder to my foot on one side AND I had to buy a damn television. I was NOT happy. He is having surgery tomorrow and the vet said she will be sending him home with pain medication...I am not giving it, my husband can get it down him.
Kimshine Binx is doing fine, the thing they took off his chin is HUGE and they gave it to me in formalin. He has pain medication for the next two days but he doesn't know he is in pain. He was supposed to wear a cone of shame but there was no way that was going to happen...he was nearly killing himself trying to get it off. His stitches are intact, he has four of them. He is going to be fine. Bijou still walks around like a drunk but she plays, she eats, she seems to be falling down less (or else I am in denial)...I SO want them to be okay.
Thanks for asking.
Ellen
I'm so glad to hear your cats are fairing well these days! What is the growth they took off his chin? Did they send any of it to Path?
There is no way to have a cat wear a cone, they are much to dignified! LOL
Ellen don't worry yourself over Bijou, if she is having a quality life then don't sweat it. You will know if she's not ok. You're not in denial.
Happy Friday!!
Kim
Kimshine I just saw this comment of yours from two months ago. Bijou is still with us, she has good days and bad days...some days she actually sort of runs but most days she has trouble getting around. Amazingly, she can jump from the floor onto my bed...she cannot get down from any height, she can't support herself. She plays like crazy in the evening and in the mornings, she wakes me up by licking and biting my hand. Sometimes, she wants me to feed her and other times, she just wants me to put her on the floor so she can use the litter box. There are days when she does not make it all the way in to the litter box and those are not my favorite mornings but that's what soap and water are for. She is still on the prednisone, I stopped the phenobarb because I don't think she is having seizures. I have it should she have them but I don't think so.
They did not send the growth out that they removed from Binx's chin...it would have been another $150 and I could not afford it. The vet said she was pretty sure it was a keratosis and she did not think it was malignant. So far, there is no sign of it returning and it has healed over so well that it's hard to tell where it was. Our youngest daughter was here for a visit a month and a half ago and I had sent her a photo of it...she asked me to PLEASE put it somewhere where she would not see it because she had nightmares over it after I sent the photo, LOL. It IS pretty ugly.
Thanks for the support.
Ellen
I use the towel for personal protection also. If using a syringe, I place it as far back as possible near the cheek and shoot the medicine as far back as possible in the throat. The more they taste the bitterness of the medicine, the more they will foam up. Foaming is rarely an allergic reaction but it is scary to see it.
Best wishes!
Giulia This is a great demo, I used this method, but I also had the 2nd person holding the cat by the scruff of the neck and that helped immobilize my cat as well. When my helper was not around I did burrito wrap my cat and had him on a table that was high enough so I could hold him in the towel under one arm, next to my body then I could hold his head-ears back and put the syringe in the side of his mouth. Don't worry by day 10 you will have it worked out
Giulia Sorry G----I never could get anything in my cats that they didn't want. Thankfully, they led long healthy lives un-medicated. Get a beagle------they will literally eat anything.
I've looked at at least 20 videos on how to do this. I know how to hold the head. I know how to scruff. The cat burrito only works if the cat isn't already fighting. Later (for dose number 2), I'm going to try a pillow case.
It's now later. Pillowcase definitely works better. (IF you have someone to help hold it open as you drop the cat into it.) I also learned to put the liquid more toward the back of the throat so the taste buds at the front of the tongue (which are more sensitive), aren't as involved. Squirted it down in one gulp, no foaming. Kimshine - yes you're right, shoot it as far back as possible. So dose number 2 was easier than dose number 1. (Well, original dose number 1 when husband wasn't here to help just went all over me and the floor and the cat, but not DOWN the gullet! lol)
Also took a suggestion off one video to squirt a treat of some kind after. I went and bought some human tuna (cheapest I could find in water - which is only 10 or 15 cents more per can than catfood). Neither of my cats seem too interested in wet cat food, except the first couple of times. I've tried just about everything and they like it for half a day, then turn their noses up and scratch at it like it's poop that needs to be buried. And the cat treats are good, but in this case I wanted more of an incentive and something to help take that nasty taste out of her mouth. I've never found a cat that doesn't like the tuna water squeezed out of a can of tuna for humans. So right after I squirted the medicine, I squired a bit of the tuna juice with another syringe. We all liked the experience a whole lot better! lol
Of course tomorrow is another day. Oy! And then in a week I have to give our other cat a hefty worming pill. I mean this thing is as large as a human pill. (I don't get it - couldn't they make them smaller for smaller gullets????) Another learning experience. Can't wait!
Appreciate all your help and support! (and thanks for that link missellen - definitely something to look into. Assuming pilling a cat is actually easier.) As with anything, it takes practice and perseverance!
I had forgotten about these instructions when I first read your blog. You will need to substitute liquid every time it says "pill," but I think it is worth your while.
I loved it - hope you do, too!
YoungAtHeart HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA! I've seen another variation of that, but I think this is probably better!
Last night didn't go as well as the day before. Only got one med down her. The other went flying. Didn't get to it this morning. Which was actually a small joy, I'm sure for both of us! Will only be giving tonight's version. Hey, her poop is no longer diarrhea. We've progressed DESPITE it all. If only there were a big enough cat treat to bury a pill in, like a dog. (Thinking of the upcoming worming pill for the other cat that is HUGE. It's the size of a Selenium pill if any of you take that OTC.) If only my cats liked wet food. Hey, it'll just be another learning experience in life. Perhaps all cat owners just need to go to basic veterinary school - How to Give Cats Meds 101.
elvan "Cone of shame!" lol You know, I'm finding we can only do what we can do. The vets give us the optimum version, but reality - is - reality. And we are not vets used to doing this on a regular basis. Besides which, they have COMPETENT helpers. Shall we say, uh.. perhaps husbands are quite qualified as competent helpers in this area! lol
We can't find any soft catfood they like eating at the moment. They haven't come up with Mole flavor yet, which is preferred. lol
No, Missy, we are continuing the trials and tribulations. Got a dose in her this morning. And maybe? a last one for tonight. Eventually it will all be over. And hopefully she's still love me. (I hope!) lol It HAS cured her diarrhea. So perhaps it's all worth it. Though I don't think I could handle a second go round.
Please don't use the pills. They don't work! Yes, this does cause some foaming. Stick the syringe further down the mouth, all the way to the back of the throat! Scruff them hard on a surface where they are at shoulder level or higher, then just top the head back with the hand scuffing them and push the syringe all the way to the back of the throat and push the plunger. It helps to be ready to push the plunger. This should take only a split second if done right! Good luck!
I feel for you. Seriously.
