Give and get support around quitting

HELP!

What are the easiest methods used to quit smoking?  I have gone to ear therapy, chewing gum, quit for two days max - nothing has helped us far.

Welcome to our community!

Nothing is going to quit FOR you.  It isn't easy, but it is IS doable.  If you educate yourself on your addiction, prepare, plan and commit, you CAN be successful!  It is uncomfortable and, at times, difficult, but as long as you make the decision that you will not smoke NO MATTER WHAT you can win this battle over addiction.

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for a free pdf of it on the net (copyright enforcement won't allow me to post the link here).

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmokingonline.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. You should also do the tracking and separation exercises suggested in My Quit Plan http://www.becomeanex.org/my-quit-plan.php

After you have completed the recommended reading, it will be time to make an informed choice of the quit aid, if any, you will use. If you go that route, I personally recommend the aids that don't let the addict control the dose such as the available prescription drugs or the patch. If used properly, gum, lozenges and inhalers are fine, but they need to be used only as a last resort.  I have seen folks become addicted to them if they substitute them for every cigarette they used to smoke - just trading one addiction for another.  I do not recommend the e-cigarette for three reasons: 1) the vapor has been compared to the polluted air in Bejing on a bad day, 2) they just provide another nicotine delivery system while continuing the hand to mouth smoking motion, and 3) the batteries can spontaneously catch on fire. . But – any method that you think will work well for you will be best for you.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand. If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

The easiest and surest way to quit smoking is to die.  Everyone I know who has died quit smoking immediately.  Ironically, a lot of them had no intention of quitting, and suddenly they just did.  I'm being facetious, of course, but the truth is if you want to keep living and quit smoking then you have to commit to the quit program, cope with the detox, and get the job done.  It isn't easy.  If it was, every smoker would do it, 'cuz let's face it, smoking isn't fun.

But you didn't say easy, did you?  You just asked what's easiest, which is a different story.  I know getting lost at sea in a life raft is pretty effective.  No gas stations or convenient stores in the middle of the ocean, and after just about a day without water, you'll forget all about your craving for nicotine.  In fact, you'd sell your last cigarette for a single, little drop of water.  Because you 'need' water.  You don't 'need' nicotine.

Prison?  Do you get to smoke in prison?  I'm not sure.  I hear they have it pretty cush in there.  But maybe if you get a hard ass jailer or, better yet, a prison mate who steals all your stuff for protection, you just wouldn't be able to smoke.  Pretty simple.  If you can't, you don't.  And you'd probably realize pretty quickly how disgusting smoking really is when you're cell mate who just smoked all your cigarettes decides to kiss you.  Smoker's breath.  YUCK!

Those are the easiest two ways I can think of to quit.  I know they're not for everyone.  A lot of people just buck up and tough it out, repeating to themselves until they're convinced that they just don't do that any more and smoking is not an option.  It helps, as others will tell you, to get educated about addiction, find lots of 'alternative' things to do when you're thinking about quitting quitting.  And support.  Come here often: read, blog, make friends and have fun.  Before you know it, you'll be a non-smoker and though it wasn't necessarily the easiest thing you've ever done, you'll have done it!

mandypadayachee  Welcome to EX, you have gotten some great advice...both the serious and the hilarious.  It takes a commitment and no one CAN do it for you.  It was not easy for me, I think planning ahead and reading all that you can about nicotine addiction are HUGE helps.  I also think staying close to this site makes a big difference.  I tried to quit more than once but this time, I had done all of the reading I could and I planned my quit, identified my triggers and made plans to address them without smoking...THEN I got really, really sick and the choice was gone.  I HAD to quit.  I have COPD and have done irreversible and serious damage to my lungs, what a waste.  Believe in yourself and believe that smoking does not do anything FOR you, it just does a lot TO you.

Again, welcome.

I agree, staying close to the site is KEY! It has helped me SO much, I can't even explain it. There is so much knowledge, wisdom and kindness - with a touch of hilarious that it takes my mind of even thinking about smoking.
