Give and get support around quitting

How do you sleep?

Hello,

My quit date is just around the corner so I've been working on finding my triggers and how to get past those. One thing I have found the last few days is it's really difficult for me to get to sleep at night without a just before bed cigarette. I feel tired and everything but my mind just keeps racing. Then as I lay awake I just keep going back to thinking I should just go out for a cig and that'll help me get to sleep. So I'm wondering what everyone else is doing to help them sleep or have you folks just been running on E for this time? It's made me a bit short tempered being so tired all the time but I definitely don't want to give in to the cravings. I'm also cautious about using sleep aids as I don't want to trade one habit for another. Thanks! Abby

Good to see you, Britt!

How is the quit going?  Lost any of the weight you gained by eating "your weight in ice cream and chocolate chips?"  I STILL chuckle when reading that!

I so wish I could help on this one.  I found after the first few days quit, I sleep so much better then when I smoked.  However, I have a routine of sipping herbal tea, watch some tv and then relax in bed with my book which helps me fall asleep.  You will have to find new way at night to relax before going to bed. ~ here for you ~ Colleen

Thanks for sharing Abby- CONGRATS AND GOOD JOB! I pray and ask MY LORD Jesus to help ME fall sleep and sometimes I just say his name over and over and BAM 7 - 8 hours LATER I wake beautifully rested! Please take what HELPS and let go of the rest - thank you.

Welcome to EX Godsgoals19  I am afraid that not many people are likely to see this comment and there are LOTS of people here who can relate to you and can certainly offer you a great deal of advice.  I am on oxygen at night only, did not go on it until after I had been quit for a while...it would have to have been over a year because I didn't see a pulmonologist until I had been quit for over a year, took me three months to get an appointment.  No nicotine replacement is going to quit FOR you...they can only take away SOME of the physical withdrawal but you have to deal with psychological withdrawal and that is much stronger and lengthier...at least that is my experience.  I suggest you read everything you possibly can find about nicotine addiction, this IS an addiction, I suggest that you make a plan...My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX  and read blogs, you might want to start with this one by JonesCarpeDiem‌ My Welcome To New Members (12+ Years Of Watching)  then you might want to read these particular blogs...https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex  Quitting is not an event, it is a journey and it is one day at a time.  You CAN do this, despite all of the issues you have.  Please post a blog, go to the little pencil next to your avatar and select Blog Post...title it letting people know you are new and need help...write what you wrote here, explain what your issues are and how important it is that you quit...for your heart, your lungs, your surgery...you LIFE.  I quit over five years ago with the help of this site but I suffered a lot of lung damage because of how long I smoked.  You are already on oxygen...quitting is not easy but you can do it.  Read Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking", stay close to this site, read, comment, be open to suggestions made by the members here.

Again, welcome.

Welcome to our community!

Please take some time to do the reading I will recommend.  It will go a long ways to your understanding of this addiction and will definitely help you be successful this time!

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. Here's a link to a video here on the site which describes nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. You should also do the tracking and separation exercises recommended here on the site.

Lot of folks here have quit without an aid (we call it "Smart Turkey") - the nicotine is out of your body in about a week, and then it's your body getting used to life without it.  You will go through a bit of physical withdrawal from the drug, but you can get through that - and then it's just the psychological part of the addiction that's left - the associations and triggers in your life.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:
 https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!
