I smoked my last cigarette at 2am friday April 15th and have been smoke free ever since...I am having a tough tough time not smoking "just one".  I know how it will end up if I do.  Just wanting to get some words of encouragement and some ideas on how to get through the next few days.

Thanks,

Amanda

Hi Amanda!  Can you give us a little bit more information, such as how long have you smoked? how much did you smoke? are you using any medications and/or patches to quit?  Did you do any reading prior to your quit?  Do you have support at home or work?   Just helps to know a little bit more so we can help you!

Amanda, Welcome! Glad you've made the momentous decision to quit!

Many of us here read www.quitsmokingonline.com and www.whyquit.com. As for myself, the reading, planning and preparing were all essential to my quit.

Do you have quit kit set up for when you get cravings?

There will be many more after me to help you along, too, but the best thing many of us do is read, read, read!! Especially some of the blogs here. Maggies page has lots of resource links!

You CAN do this!

Amanda - Welcome to the site! Congrats on your quit! Reading really helped me - blogs here, the free course Lynette mentioned above at:   http://quitsmokingonline.com/ and Allen Carr's book - "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking" -

Stay close here. Blog whenever you need to - ask questions, share how you are doing. You are so right about not having that "one". Many of us here use - N.O.P.E. - "Not One Puff Ever" as a mantra. I printed it out on a card and posted it and carried it with me.

  Again - congrats!!

Amanda, the think that helped me not to smoke even 1 after that first day was thinking about how difficult it would be to go through the those days again if I did smoke.  The first and second days of not smoking were nearly unbearable for me, and I didn't want to do anything to repeat them.

Lots of luck with your quit.  Keep it up!

Hi Amanda, It is quite common to have some cravings in the first week or so of quiting smoking. You are doing great and just try to stay as busy as you can and have plenty of gum, hard candy and other things to use when the crave starts. Read any and everything you can on smoking addiction and ways to get past the want for that one because with patience and focus, it can be done and you will be so happy that you quit and stayed quit.

Your doing great!  The best things in life are sometimes hard.  Like childbirth...lol.  I have been quit almost 90 days and at first it was like being a bipolar monkey.  It does get better.  I promise.  Just hang in there and fight the urges they don't last that long but when they do just face them, recognize what they are and tell them to be gone.  You are in control now, not your smokes!  If you have to physically scream that to your urges-----DO IT!  You can do this.  Hang in there.

Welcome

You did just what you needed to / to get the help and support to do this and that is ((( Blog & Read ))) keep doing it as long as it takes to stop you from smoking.. And the way I know that it works is because I have been smoke free for 40 somedays and never thought I could go more then 45 minutes before I came to this site...

GoodLuck!!

Keep coming back!!

I echo John --- coming here helps more than you think!!  I just passed Day 70 yesterday and I probably only stop here a couple of times a week now.  I will tell you initially, though, I pretty much lived here every evening after work.  I found that reading and responding to blogs kept my mind busy, and kept my hands busy, in addition to just gaining insight from others.  I do really well most days -- every now and again those demons will hit you out of the blue but we'll all have to deal with pieces of that on some level for quite awhile.

And you are right -- you can't have just one.  Can't happen, or you'll get the 'joy' of starting over from scratch.  That's why I'm here for round two.  I gave up a perfectly good quit after 6 years thinking I could have 'just one'.  Right.  Now that I have proven to myself (despite what everyone warned me about) that I really CAN'T have just one, I'm taking that more to heart this time.

Hang in there --- start a hobby.  It's amazing how much seemingly extra time you'll have on your hands.  I started to take up Chain Maille -- I push out about 3 bracelets a week  (with no outlet), but it keeps me busy -- and they're pretty 🙂 )

Anyone need a bracelet?

Hang in there Mandy. I've only been here for 5 days, this is the 6th day of my quit. I practically live here now. Yes, it keeps one busy but more importantly the information, support and comradaire we get here is invaluable. We can do this!
