My name is Kelly, I have been smoking for 4 years now..this time...i quit for 17 years and stupid me, started up again because of the stress of a divorce and the illness of my mother. It was to much for me to handle. I moved in with my sister, who was a smoker and started smoking again. was the stupidest thing I have ever did in my life. My mother died three years ago due to lung cancer. I want to quit so bad and have tried several times throughout the years. I can't understand why it is so hard for me this time since i did it before!! The thing is, is I am feeling the effects of the smoking and I don't even enjoy it anymore so I am ready to be done with it. Please help me to help myself.. I have my date set for Nov.16th... But would like to try sooner if i can..i'm tired of smoking..I do not enjoy it anymore.. And it just plain scares me to think of going down the same path my mother went.. HELP!!

Hello Kelly and welcome to the EX community! I quit for 10 years the last time and smoked for 8 years before I quit with the help of this site...

We post suggested reading because over the years it has helped so many people change the way they THINK and FEEL about quitting from a place of sacrifice to a place of gain… and of course I have my favorite stuff to add!

Congratulations on the best decision you could possibly make for yourself…

Always the MOST important thing you can do is educate yourself about the nicotine addiction by reading, reading and more reading…Please go to the EX homepage and begin the  3 step prep to quit….I only did it for 5 days myself so a couple days will help!

We suggest a 'quit kit' composed of a list of distraction techniques and things to help you through like cinnamon sticks, crunchy things (carrots, celery, chips some hard candy, lots of water), lemons…biting into a lemon or sticking your head in the freezer and taking a deep breath gets you through.

It takes the mindset that we aren't giving up anything...we are doing it because we want to and not signing up for a lifetime of deprivation but a lifetime of freedom...that is the personal journey no one can take for us...We will be here for you every step of the way! xo

Hi Kelly,

You came to a great place for support! I can relate to your story- I had quit for many years and re-started also, for the past 10 years. I came to this site on my quit date, but stuck with it. I'm only on day 7, but I am hanging in there and I know I am done smoking.  Read The Easy Way link that was just shared with you. It is very helpful. And congratulations for being here!

Hi Kelly, you have made the first step and you should be so proud of yourself. You have  picked life instead of addiction. The money that I would spend on cigarettes I put in my success jar, you will be so amazed how fast it adds up. Treat yourself with your success money. You are so worth it. I'm only on day 20 so I still have a way to go. So let's do this together! Hang in there!!!!!
