hello fellow exers....i have remained quit now for almost 6 years... some of you will remember me as izzy  i am still once in a while fighting cravings... but dont want to discourage anyone... the brief battle is far outweighed by the enourmous benefits of being a non smoker..

this horrible disease has created enough havic in my life and i never ever want to be addicted like i was  you see   i was a smoker for r43 years... and i thought i would never be able to quit...i tried quitting and failed miserably many times over the course of about 10 years...

it was so depressing  i cried  and gave up so many times.. but just knowing that others were suffering the same way i was brought me back to start over again time and time again...i got alot of help from those who were committed right here on becomeanex... i even seen the admin change a couple of times. and the format too...

so what brings me back today...thereb  is a commercial whick keeps appearing on television.. its about not having to go cold turkey... it is a chantix commercial  i guess many may have seen it...well what  i am having problems with is when i turkey knocks down the ashtray into the trash can....it sets off a trigger   isnt that crazy?...when i see that long cigarette butt hit the bottom of the trashi get a crave every time... its crazy...

believe me i am in no danger of losing my quit... i truly enjoy not smoking ...but just so some of you who are newly quit are thinking that  you will never be free... that is not true...sure youmay get craves from time to time... but that does not mean you have to act on it... instead it means to react... react with what you have learned here... build a strong foundation.... that little crave is nothing more than a twinge now... like a little tug... nothing like what was in the beginning...... hang in there those triggers are hiding behind every corner dont be caught off guard

An izzy sighting!!!!  Oh boy.  Just googled that commercial.  Too bad turkeys aren't that cute in real life!   I like the commercial.  Though I prefer smart fast turkey myself.  I totally understand why that could produce a trigger.  They can hit us any time anywhere, right out of the blue.  Fortunately, as you wisely said:  "sure you may get craves from time to time... but that does not mean you have to act on it... instead it means to react... react with what you have learned here... build a strong foundation.... " (emphasis mine)  Great point!  And THAT's why you have such a beautiful, strong quit.  We walk the talk as someone just said here.  Kudos.

Your post spoke to me today - I have been having thoughts of smoking the past couple of days   - and I am almost SEVEN years removed.   Don't worry, newbies, these thoughts are easy to dismiss, but I am dismayed every time one appears out of nowhere.  What an addiction this is.  We must ALWAYS remember how difficult the early days are or we might just listen to that addict within and think "just one" would be OK.  I know better and will never, ever let it get me back in its clutches!

So good to see you my fellow traveler of the desert.

I always welcomed your presence at each oasis we stopped at.

I know how strong you are and am glad that you are still walking the freedom trail.

One step at a time is how we got where we are today.

Nice to meet you!  I too WAS a smoker of 43 years!   I am so sorry you still have cravings.  This is something I don't experience after a little over a year and half of quitting.  I think it was just my time to quit.  Keep on being strong, and never ever forget!   This a great blog for newbies!   I'm glad you enjoy not smoking!  I do too!  Your post says just how strong that addiction to nicotine really is!

Congrats to you  I understand the thoughts. I get the too once and awhile but they really are not craves.....just thoughts. I still remain vigilant and protective, but these days I am much more educated on the addiction. Understanding the enemy helps me keep my 'quit forcefield' strong.  Hugs!
