back to smoking

I started smoking again about 10 days ago. I'm disappointed but I'm going to make another quit attempt in about 4 weeks.

Each time I've attempted to quit smoking I am fine for about the first 4 weeks. Then I slowly dip into depression and develop unbearable anxiety. Seems for me the lack of nicotine and other whatever other chemicals are in cigarettes have a huge effect on my brain. I couldn't deal with the depression and anxiety, I'd started drinking more to combat the anxiety, foolish mistake. And the irritability I was experiencing was taking a toll on my relationship with my man, friends and job. Wow I had to change something so I went back to smoking.

I was so upset that I went to see my doctor. He prescribed Zyban and Ativan. I took the Zyban for just over a week and developed insomnia and other side effects. So much for the Zyban, I've no luck with other anti-depressants either, they just give me side effects that are not tolerable and they're a bear to get off.

I've got some big life changing events coming up in my life. July 25th is my last day working. I'm quitting to go to school. I start nursing school on Aug 11. I have two weeks vacation starting the 28th and I'm off to the Canadian Rockies to visit my parents.

I have an appointment booked with a telephone smoking cessation counsellor in mid Aug. We're going to once again do a plan of attack on giving up the cigarettes for good. I need to get myself settled into a new routine when I start school which includes exercising, diet and probably supplements. I know someone who knows alot about supplements and hopefully she'll help me to not go into the depression and anxiety when I do quit.

I didn't have a problem not smoking. I loved being a non-smoker, loved the feeling of breathing freely and knowing that I was getting healthier. For me the depression and anxiety associated with not smoking is unbearable and is my only relapse trigger.
