Sixteen years ago I made up my mind and with lots of prayer I stopped drinking and using drugs. I can't seem to

quit this nasty habit. I need all the support I can get.

Because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known.  and in laboratory tests rats will self-induce nicotine to DEATH.  Working a recovery program can be just as helpful in getting clean from nicotine.

Good luck with your quit, Detroit.

I think that deep down in our guts we have given ourselves permission to smoke because up until recently is was socially acceptable.

No one could really tell if you were oversmoking whereas if you are overdoing drinking or drugs it is readily apparent and the legal repercussions can be quite serious if something happens or you get pulled over..

THere is nothing magical to quiting smoking. Yes you will be uncomfortable (can you accept that?) for a week, and then the memories will drive you to want to smoke (can you deal with that?)

The secret is deciding and then keeping them away from your face. You don't even hae to want to quit or use willpower or prayer or quit smoking aids, just decide and do it.

I am sure you know all too well that the brain wants what give us plesure weather it is good for us or notl. That is the nature of addiction. If you get a chance come to my page and read my blog on my observation on WHAT SMOKING REALLY IS THE NICODEMON WANTS YOU. Hope you will find it helpful or at least enjoy reading it. To answer you question in my opinion any addiction that is legal is easier to be in denial about it and harder to come to terms with. Nicotine is very addictive and the act of smoking is a pleasant ritual so it really kicks our butt. I am on day 154 I never thought I could quit This time it is different with  all the info and support I have got from this site. Good Luck   If I can do this anybody can I really really mean it.

I think as bad as a lot of society looks at smoking it's still easy to get, cheap compared to drugs and legal, I've heard other sober people say smoking was the last they gave up, there's hope.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I  thought I had identified all my triggers until I was on the phone for awhile with a friend. I realized that out of habit I was reaching for a cigarette. I am determined to quit. This is the first time I've ever really tried to or wanted to.

Thanks again
