They say no good deed goes unpunished. I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone, etc. So last week a couple from town who are customers in the bar I manage came in. They burn wood for heat. Anyway Charlie is obviously not feeling well. They tell me they went to the doctor and he has severe bronchitis. The long and short of it is that they are also out of wood and using electric heaters to keep warm. Knowing he is sick and thinking he won't get better without heat, I went to my boss and he agreed to pay for a truckload of wood to be delivered to them. It was so nice of him to pay for it because I didn't really have the extra money to do it. Two days later our furnace goes out and we had to have it replaced. So I was thinking of the irony that they had heat and I didn't. When I quit smoking and gave my cigarettes to my coworker thinking he is always broke and would appreciate the gift, I never dreamed he would in turn offer me my own cigarettes knowing I was quitting. I'm chuckling because I feel like maybe I need to start being a mean sob. So I don't get punished any more for good deeds?? Anyway I am going to go to bed tonight more resolved than ever to quit smoking. Tomorrow is the start of my stop smoking story.
