What connections means to the newbies of the world ......

The World...

I’m 15 days into my quit. I’ve smoked since I was 12 and just turned 48. The math is overwhelming I know. I have tried to quit so many times and went back to smoking every single time between 7 and 30 days. So this time has to be different. Has to be. I’ve got my nicotine gum but the physical withdrawal is not what gets me when I have tried to quit-it’s my head. I’ve worked in community mental health and addictions for 20 years but I’ve realized I can rationalize with the best of them. So I decided I needed to try the one piece I’ve never tried in all these years-to surround myself with people who understand where I am and where I hope to go. So I found this site. I got on and asked a couple of questions and read the posts but I still didn’t have any “connections“ for support. The old me would have gotten fed up and walked away from the site and used this to rationalize smoking again. “Well there just isn’t any support out there for me so I might as well smoke until I find some...”. Omg sometimes my own mind freaks me out. Lol. So what did the new me do instead?  I came back fighting-I found the list of Elders and looked at the profiles of the folks who have offered to be supports and then I took a leap of faith and reached out to someone. How affirming it was to get not only a response but from someone who cared enough to also place a call to action to other elders. What did those two simple actions do for me you ask? Rocked.....my.......world!! I have support! I have connections! I am NOT alone in this fight! And neither are you!  Step out of that comfort zone and push until you get what you need. You and I are worth as much of a fight as we would put up for our families to help them. Thank you Kristen for believing in the process this site offers and in me without even knowing me.

I believe in you and all of us do!! I’m so glad you didn’t give up and reached out! Blog as much as you need/want.  Celebrate every small victory. I celebrated when I made it for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 5 days....eventually you’ll have to look up how many days you’ve been quit. Now that’s an awesome feeling! Stick with us and you too will be an elder!

Sometimes it is that leap of faith that saves us.  Glad you took it.  Glad you recognize it.  It is only when we get out of our comfort zone that we have the greatest growth.  But boy is it excruciating!  Until it isn't.

Welcome to Ex. You want this, your actions say so. Keep it coming--one day at a time.
