Sure you can start right now, which is a good time as any. Makes sense to me.  24 hrs from the last time you had a cigarette is one day.

It is good right now to distract yourself HOWEVER many of us here have worn the statement I don't do that anymore like a blanket.

What it does is acknowledge that you either want to smoke, are accustomed to smoking, or afraid or intrigued by smoking.  Then, it redirects.

I believe in the philosophy of I'm not obligated to consider nonsense.  Every reason I had for smoking being beneficial (anxiety etc) is a myth.  Even smoking to end withdrawal is a myth.  You just prolong the inevitable (if you are quitting).

So, if nonsense isn't an option (i.e. the reasons aren't based on objective reality, goal producing, keep me from harm, aid survival, help emotions) then I'm left with metaphorically having to change the side of the boat I'm fishing on.

There are things in the world that cause fear (e.g. life without nicotine) but dwelling on them doesn't affect their reality or outcomes.   My experience with smoking has informed me that smoking doesn't help me or my family achieve our short term or long term goals.

You can do this.  I suggest going to google and searching for a free .pdf of Alan Carr's Easy Guide to Quit Smoking.  He's a bit goofy but he dispels the myths and is a good starting point.

Bookmark your days here.

I believe that you can quit smoking.

Today is a GREAT DAY to start!  You have your answer in your blog, you have no cigarettes and you have no money.  I think the universe is sending you a message.

I hope you have been preparing and I hope you have a quit kit and lean on us.  Put the word HELP in the title of your blog if you feel particularly vulnerable.  Look at the profile pages of some members and see what people have been through and how they have stayed quit.  There is always someone who has been where you are or who is headed to where you are, we lean on each other, that's how this works!

Welcome to your smokefree life!

Your quit date is in two days.  You ran out of cigarettes and money today to buy more ...What do YOU think?  Can you accept tomorrow as your quit date instead?  Or are you going to let yourself perhaps have the fact that you quit a couple of days early be an excuse for some possible future relapse?  Something to think about.  What WE think matters not a hoot.  What YOU think does.  You know yourself better than any of us.  Choose wisely.

When I first quit I was here morning, noon and night.  When you first stop smoking you find yourself thinking about it a lot, and being here on EX to "think about" it in a smarter, healthier way makes a huge difference.  Also, I read the Allen Carr book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" and it really helped me to not feel deprived about not smoking.  If you haven't read that book, here's a link to a free, online PDF of the whole book.

We know you can do this, and we're here to help in every way we can.
