It's day six for me of being a ex-smoker. I have a wedding reception tonight and I am very nervous about going and not having the urge to smoke with many of my friends. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Dance, and Dance, and Dance some more!!! Forget about the smoke and just celebrate. Go easy on the booze.  You will still have a great time.

Hi, Elizabeth.  Congratulations on six days!  While you can't guarantee that you won't get an urge to smoke at the wedding reception, you can make a commitment to yourself that you will not smoke.

I've found that when I tell my smoking friends that I've quit, they're typically A) very supportive, and B) jealous.  All smokers want to quit or wish they'd never started (even if they'd never admit it).  At six days smoke-free, you're lightyears ahead of current smokers.  You're doing exactly what they wish they were doing.  Feel proud of your choice and your progress!!

There's a saying around here that "Smokers don't get to smoke; they have to smoke," and it's SO true.  Try to see their smoking for what it is. They're not smoking because they enjoy it, because they get some kind of pleasure from it.  They're smoking for a fix.  They will have to leave a loved one's wedding reception, perhaps missing important events and special moments, to feed the junkie within themselves.  They are slave to nicotine.  You are FREE!!!!  Count your blessings!

Finally, think practically and protect your quit.  If alcohol is a trigger for you, don't drink.  If you can avoid being around the smokers, do - If they must smoke outside, then stay inside.  As someone wrote earlier today, "If you don't want to slip, stay away from slippery places."

Be strong.  You can do it!!!!  I'll be sending you my best vibes this evening.  Let us all know how you're doing and how tonight goes.

Day 9 for me and I had the same experience last night, around a lot of smokers for the first time. First of all don't breath in their smoke, you just got all that nasty nicotine out of your body, don't let it back in. You may actually be suprised at how little you are tempted. Take the opportunity to watch then as they smoke and see them as the addicts that they really are, that we all still are. All dressed up at what should be a celebration and they are going to be getting thenselves all stinky and killing themselves in the process. You don't want that, you don't need that. Protect your quit at all cost, you have come too far to start over. Relax and have fun. N.O.P.E.

Hi Elizabeth, just think you will not miss any of the festivities because you had to go out and smoke. I missed alot at my daughters wedding 2 years ago because I was too busy smoking!

Hey Elizabeth!  I'll be sending positive energy your way tonight and I know you can do it!!  If you are having a really bad craving just go up to someone you trust and say "help, I don't want to smoke right now but I'm really tempted".  I've found that saying that out loud helps a lot and of course your friend will be flattered you chose them to help distract you.  Have a great time and remember to use distractions!  N.O.P.E.  We are all rooting for you!

By all means, go and have fun....the smokers will be outside so you won't have to think about it...instead, snack on the horsdoerves to keep busy, have some sort of non-alcohol beverage to keep your hands busy, talk to your friends and family and DONT drink for this evening...(drinking is the number one reason for losing a good quit because we lose control)....instead, concentrate on the non-smokers and interact with them for a change....( you'll also be able to laugh at the drunk guests)...and when you need a break, go use the bathroom and REMEMBER...you don't have to stay long....if you feel uncomfortable for any reason...leave and come back here to this website and tell us what happened...xoxo Nancy

Hi Elizabeth!  First, congratulations on day 6....YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So....you haven't smoked in 6 days....why are you nervous now?  Your friends will have to smoke outside....you will be inside....besides, I remember at around 5 or 6 days that when someone walked by me who had just smoked, it smelled HORRIBLE!!!!  I couldn't believe I used to smell like that.....YUCK!

Keep your determination and have fun!   Do what Jawidge said....dance, dance, dance.  (Look at his page and his picture...he just had his daughter's wedding and he had the BEST time....he didn't smoke and neither will you)!

Have fun!
