WOMEN: periods changing after quitting smoking?

Hi everyone, my name is Violet and I quit cold turkey on June 29th of this year after smoking about a pack a day on and off for 15 years. After the first week, quitting wasn't a problem for me at all and all of the cravings were gone. I simply just learned to live life again without cigarettes, just like I did before I started smoking.

Anyway, my question is about menstrual periods. After I quit smoking my normally 33 day cycle completely went bonkers and hasn't been the same since. In fact, my period didn't only change once, it continues to be at a different time each month so far. I use two period trackers on my android phone to detect when I should be expecting my next period and even after they compensated for the changes, the prediction it gives me is still off. My last period was three days early and was a heavy flow for one day. That's it, just one day. After that day, I stopped bleeding, not even spotting!

I've googled this question many times and can't find anything to answer my question which is why I posted this TMI here, hoping that either someone else here has experienced the same sort of weird menstrual changes after quitting smoking or knows what is happening. I know that quitting smoking can change and/or reset a lot of things in our bodies but I would think that after over two months of not smoking that things would be back to normal.

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

And to those of you that are new to this whole "not smoking" thing, I promise it will get easier. Just remember, mind over matter. You learned to do a lot of things early in life without smoking and will relearn to do them, it just takes time and effort. 🙂

I had already gone through menopause when I quit so I don't have first hand experience...but I do know there is a connection between nicotine and estrogen production.  Also I don't know your age but its possible the changes in your cycle have nothing to do with quitting.   You could be entering periomenopause which begins many many (sometimes 10-15) years before menopause-a common symptom is irregular heavy periods.  Been there done all that and what helped me understand all this was reading material by Dr. Christiane Northrup she has written several books about women's health google her and periomenopause you may find some answers.

Best of luck and congrats on your quit!

I have only been quit for three weeks but I noticed I was late to start this month, I am usually like clockwork, 28 days or else I'll start early. Never late... I feel that there are many changes your body is still getting accustomed to though. For me I felt it was just the experience of added stress and tension that made me late.

The stress that your body is experiencing from quitting smoking could cause your period to be irregular.  However ive heard that periods should get more regular after quitting.  Its been a few years now since you made this post, how are your periods doing now?

I've quit for a few weeks now and my period is late and it's NEVER late. There's zero chance I'm pregnant so that's out. What's so frustrating to me is if you google just quit smoking and late/missed period, there are literally dozens and dozens of women asking this very same question: "can quitting smoking make your next period late or no show all together" and there is literally NOTHING. No studies or information, just people saying "that happened to me" or "I've never heard of that could you be pregnant?" It's frustrating bc with this many women asking this question, there is clearly a pattern, and it's kind of shocking that there have been no studies on this. Seeing how many people asked this same question however did make me relax since clearly it's common, just weird that the general answers are "hmmm don't know".

I am so happy to have found this post!!!! Omg... I officially stopped smoking around Oct 2016 after about 18 yrs... Ever since my period has become insanely irregular and hormone levels are off... Making me stress and go crazy even worse. I quit after meeting the love of my life and we are trying to start a family. He doesn't know that I was still smoking a bit when we met. Now I am going to a fertility doctor and wondering if I should smoke a bit to get my cycle back. Its been 6 months of missed, irregular periods, hormones fluctuating at odd times & I swear I am starting to think my quitting screwed me up more than anything. Please let me know if anyone else has had this happen. I know that Quitting smoking is supposed to make you more fertile but THIS IS TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE TO BE A COINCIDENCE. I KNOW THAT IT CHANGED MY BODY. I don't know what to do and need feedback please. Thank you all and best of luck with your goals

I am currently also experiencing this issue. Everything I find online is about quitting but no one seems so know if AFTER you quit you period will go psycho. My breast’s have been extra tender for over a few days now and I’m 4 days late for my period. Low chance I’m pregnant but I may go get a test to be sure.   It’s kind of sad because you know if this was something men dealt with too there would probably be better studies.  I’m also emotional and I have realized that caffeine makes everything slightly worse. I am 32 years old I smoked cigarettes for about 12 years and I used Juul to quit which I used for about 1-1/2 years. I’ve been nicotine free for the first time since I can remember.  My body might just need to settle down with the hormonal changes because I am aware that smoking cigs or using nicotine causes huge hormonal changes including reduced estrogen. But I highly doubt it’s any type of premenopausal stuff. My mom never had that and she is just now dealing with menopause but I did see that was the first suggestion on here. Anyways if I find any studies I will definitely come back to share them here. I also would like to know how it’s going for the original poster on this thread.  Best regards !!

So it turned out I was pregnant...lmbo I really thought I had crazy hormonal changes due to no more nicotine which I still think contributed but at least I quit before I even knew.  My baby is 13 weeks today and doing great
