I have smoked about all my life and have hated it for at least the past three years. I tried to quit several times but gave in. I hate addition. I really hate this addiction. That's why I'm here at last. I am prepared for this journey and committed to going the whole way. This won't be easy...one day at a time...it is doable...people have quit and stayed quit!!!!! My main reason is for my health. My asthma...mild copd. I want to be around for my kids and my new grandbaby!!!! I need the energy to run around the yard!!!!!

Hello Teresa! it took me 3 years of hating it to quit as well!

We post suggested reading because over the years it has helped so many people change the way they THINK and FEEL about quitting from a place of sacrifice to a place of gain… and of course I have my favorite stuff to add!

Congratulations on the best decision you could possibly make for yourself and your loved ones…

Always the MOST important thing you can do is educate yourself about the nicotine addiction by reading, reading and more reading…Please go to the EX homepage and begin the  3 step prep to quit….I only did it for 5 days myself!

It takes the mindset that we aren't giving up anything...we are doing it because we want to and not signing up for a lifetime of deprivation but a lifetime of freedom...that is the personal journey no one can take for us...We will be here for you every step of the way! xo

Welcome Teresa!

Read the Allen Carr book above that Teddy gave you....it will give you the mind set to make the decision to quit and keep you determined to stay quit!  Each day you will promise yourself not to smoke today....tomorrow is another day and you'll make the same promise.

Come to this Site every day and read and blog and know that you are not alone...we are all here and we've been where you've been!   This quitting is VERY doable....you just have to want it bad enough!!!

Are you ready to do this?  If so, You will wake up a non-smoker tomorrow and stay that way for the rest of your life.  If you've read the info suggested and have your mind set on it, you can do this.  Get up in the morning, slap that patch on and welcome to the journey.  The patch worked miracles for me.  It will take care of your physical withdrawls.  YOU have to handle the mental part.  Stay close to this site and you will have plenty of help to get you through any tough times you may have.  We've ALL been there.

Congrats on deciding to take your life back.  It's an amazing sense of freedom and it's yours for the taking.  For the first few days, deep breaths, lots of water and sleep whenever you can.  If you get an urge to smoke, tell yourself you don't do that anymore and go find something else to do for a few minutes and the urge will pass.  Then it will happen again and it will pass.  Then the urges will start to get farther apart until you almost forget about them.  Day 1 will probably not be near as bad as you think.  The patch helps so much!  You just have to convince your brain that you don't smoke anymore.  You can do it!!!

you don't have to hate smoking to quit. if you did, you wouldn't keep going back to it.

decide to quit.

use common sense to protect yourself from risky situations

keep them away from your face

Welcome!

I also highly recommend you do all the reading linked for you.  You can use them as crave busters!

So - did you slap on the patch this morning?  How are you feeling?  Stay close and let us know if you need help!

The idea is to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take slow, deep breaths, go for a walk, play a computer game, do a crossword, bite into a lemon (yup, rind and all).   Here is a link to a list of 100 things to do instead of smoke if you need fresh ideas:

https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...

The conversation in your head CANNOT be:  "I want a cigarette.  No!  But - I WANT a cigarette.  NO!"  Instead, it needs to be "I want a cigarette.  Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?" Then DO it!

Stay busy today and for the first week.  You can do this!
