The best Challenge Yet

I have the extreme priviledge of working with adult with mental illness/disabilities. They are a special group of people who make me smile, laugh, cry and more.

I have been thinking for months now about quitting smoking and leading a healthier lifestyle, but just hadn't come up with the right motiviation to do it. Then last week one of my clients quit smoking in spite of most of the people in his house smoke. This was the absolute kick in the pants I needed to do something.

So today is day #3 without ciggarettes. I am using the patch and lozenges as well (as needed).

Change is never easy, but it is inevitable. My grandmother used to tell me the only constant in life is change. When I was young I didn't really understand what she meant, but as I grow older it makes perfect sense.

Sometimes the most heroic thing we can do for others is to do what's best for ourselves. I did this and in doing so found a terrific support system in my co-workers. They have been wonderful and no one could ask for a better team than mine!

For those just starting out, like myself, the best thing I can say is take it one minute at a time until you can take it one day at a time and so on.  Pacing ourselves is the best thing we can do.

My body craves the nicotine, but my mind is strong and can distract myself until the craving passes.  I've attempted many times over the years to stop smoking, but it was always for someone else. This time I know I will succeed because it's for myself and my own wishes and desires.

Additionally, when I feel stress at home, I cuddle with my cat (Coco). When I feel it at work, I look at the pictures of the kids in my life and it reminds me of how important other relaxations techniques are to break the cycle.

Please tell me your stories, experiences and outcomes. The more we share the more we learn.

Jackie
