Thank you all for your prayer, thoughts, and words of encouragement. Since I have received this news of cancer, I have this overwelming desire to go to high schools and tell the kids about the importance of not smoking. My future daughter- in - law is a teacher at a high school. I am going to see if see could arrange for me to speak at her high school.

I feel like I have a purpose. To try to help others. To make people quit smoking or never start smoking.

I am just so scared. I think once I have all of the test results and know exactly when we are dealing with and what the plan of treatment is, I will be able to focus on what I need to do to get through this. Right now I just feel like I am falling and there is not a net below.

Hugs to all. PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE. NO AMOUNT OF PLEASURE THAT YOU THINK YOU RECEIVE FROM SMOKING IS WORTH HEARING THE WORDS..... YOU HAVE LUNG CANCER.

Just your short paragraph will keep me away from smokes for one more day(Day6). The high school Idea sounds fantastic! You are in my thoughts in prayers.

I am sure that you have many, many years of helping people quit smoking ahead of you! I think the best way is to help one person at a time. For example, if five people successfully quit smoking here this month, that's five people that have been helped for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, giving health warnings to teenagers just goes in one ear and out the other. Everyone is invincible at that age. Gettiing sick from smoking is something that happens to somebody else.

Hi Pat! I am just so sorry to hear of your lung cancer diagnosis! I can't say I know how you feel, but I imagine it's worse than I felt when I got diagnosed with emphysema which doesn't get better and eventually kills you. I felt really bad....bad enough to finally realize that I had to quit smoking and never even contemplate even one puff. What you're planning on doing to help people is really admiral! You may get through to a few and everyone you can convince is a life saved from a horrible life of addiction. I'm holding you up in prayer...first of all for healing and secondly that your bad news may help many others.

Pat, this idea of yours is an EXCELLENT one. I went into a drug rehab when I was 17 and they started sending me out to speak at schools when I only had a month clean! It does help. You never know what seeds you are planting. I truly believe that if I want to keep what I have, I have to give it away.

Pat,
i agree with you, NO amount of smoking gives any amount of pleasure, compared to all the diseases that are smoke induced. we never know which "one" cigarette will trigger a disease. all of us should educate others as often as we can, whether it's one person at a time or a group of people. you will be in my thoughts and prayers. many hugs...

Pat, I know there are no words to say to ease your pain. But please know that there are many here who care and who will be here to listen while you journey on this new path in life. I know it won't be easy, but as you say, you have a purpose now. I was watching a show the other day, and a little girl was asking a preacher why God lets good people get sick. The preacher explained that God doesn't make people sick, and I really believe that to be true. He has shown us that while you were given a horrible diagnosis, you are rising above it through your pain and thinking of others first. Yesterday, you asked us to pray for your family, today, your thinking of the kids. I'm sure that He will bless you many times over for your unselfish giving through all of this, even if it isn't apparent at first. Please lean on Him and He will help you through this.
