On Wednesday December 20, 2023 I participated in my third gathering of the EX Cafe. Attending with me at the noon session were Todd @CommunityAdmin , Counselor Margaret and co-member @biscuit9 .

In our discussion of where we two EX members are in our quits, Margaret noted how there are many commonalities with all folks who are quitting the use of nicotine but how there are also unique differences due to our individuality. She noted that it takes each of us a certain period of time to get to the point where we truly consider ourselves to be non-smokers. She also spoke of how this all ties in with the development of our new identities as non-smokers as explained in the recent podcast Todd co-presented on this very subject along with Margaret and other esteemed Mayo Clinic professionls. Today, Todd also spoke of ongoing efforts by the administrative staff to streamline our site to make it more user-friendly.

Once more, I came away from the cafe feeling like I had gotten to know these folks in a more personal way, so I definitely benefited from the social aspect of this opportunity! And, I felt like my needs as a member of the EX Family were valued.

Hope you'll join us next month!

About the Author
Prior to my first quitting on 8/25/2019, I was a heavy smoker for over 60 years. That time, I quit due to health concerns regarding clogged arteries to my brain. Tar deposits from cigarettes were making the situation worse. I had become a prime candidate for a stroke and required surgery to clean out my left carotid artery. I have relapsed 4X since that quit, the last one being on 05.15.2022. ( At one point in all of this madness, I had been quit for 1.5 years). Then on 9/7/2021 I began my recent eight month quit before my current relapse. I am in the process of planning a return to the non-smoking life. After more than 2 weeks of smoking, wheezing and coughing and being short of breath, I have set my new quit date of June 1, 2022 as the beginning of my forever quit. I am done with this madness!! God is good.
