So my quit was scheduled for St. Pats Day.....i think to myself may as well try and start now.  I have been nicotine free for 11 hours and 16 minutes and it is killing me.  I am at work at the  station (im an ems dispatcher) and ppl keep going to smoke.  I brought my jumprope with me so that I could get some aggression out.  The hard part for me is my drive.  My commute to work is 1 hour and 35 minutes.  I am very proud and please don't laugh as I would sometimes smoke 6 just on my drive in.  Baby steps for me.  I need to go find my cheerleader Annie...she will be surprised when I tell her and excited. yay gotta run busy

Great start and welcome. Jumping rope sounds great. I have a treadmill and when I feel urges I get on the treadmill and run like hell for a few minutes. It gets rid of the craving and I'm getting in shape, I think i will get a jump rope too, that sounds like fun. We are here for you and with you.

Just think - 3 hours with no smokers around! You can drive with your window down to clear out your car - or you can drive with your window up - because you can! Your choice! Ain't it grand to have choices? 🙂

Stay strong, breathe deep - you'll need to if you're jump roping!

Wow, I think you're doing GREAT!!  My start date is tomorrow and I know I'll be taking long walks around the outside of my office building to work off stress.  You have a LONG drive time..do you have any ideas lined up for that?

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Just send one of the poor crews somewhere REALLY nasty, thatll make you feel better (least I hope it does, as a paramedic, the joys gotta go somewhere right? It sure isnt on my side of the job LOL) I understand about the long commute.. I had over an hour to drive to get to my station, and I smoked three, sometimes four on the way, just because I was bored driving and really.. who WANTS to go to work.. But YOU CAN DO THIS! I know its hard to quit in an EMS setting, even from your perspective. its high stress.. You can do this though!

My commute is about an hour and 15 and that was one of my worries.  I live in the Washington DC area and rush hour traffic can be a nightmare.  I used to smoke 3 or 4 on the way home.  After I quit smoking, I knew that the commute would be tough.  So, before I leave work I put three pieces of hard candy and one piece of chewing gum in my shirt pocket.  All of the candy must be different.  Lately it has been one cherry life saver, one strawberry creme saver, and one Werthers.  Upon pulling out of the parking lot, I randomly pick one piece of candy and pop it in my mouth.  After that one is gone I randomly pick a second one and then the third.  By this time I am about halfway.  I then chew the chewing gum (Wrigley's Doublemint) for the rest of the commute.  It seems to work just fine for me and gets my mind off of smoking and keeps my mouth busy.

I also listen to talk radio as it gets my mind focused on something other than smoking.

I am on Day 52 so it seems to be working.

Good luck.

ROCK ON DAY 52!!!  I went out for my lunch break today I stopped by the drugstore and I picked up some cinnamon discs my partner at work says they are supposed to help..I am also going to try just chewing real cinnamon sticks.  I will try the different candies it seems like it is a great idea and if it helps you then I am sure it will help me too...I like the idea of the different candies and FYI EVERYONE I HAVE NOT HAD A CIGGY IN 16 hours and 20 minutes...

I have a special CD I made with my feel good music - especially filled with songs that are fun to sing really loud. Singing really loud as an exsmoker is an awesome experience, and if you're not a good singer, it's best to do it in a car with the windows up!

I once read a list of 100 things skinny people do. One of them was squeeze their butt cheeks at red lights.  I once tried that on day 1 whenver I had a craving.  My butt cheeks were in extreme pain the next day.

Go to the library and get an audio book.

Download some audios from Allen Carr (you can probably find some on HWC's page.

Play drums on the steering wheel.

Like Joe said, Talk Radio - that one annoys me too much.

Driving was really tough for me - but only for a few days.  For some reason it didn't bother me for long.  Within a week the only cigarette thoughts I had when driving were noticing my car didn't smell anymore!  Phone call triggers lasted longer.

Stay strong and breathe deep!
