Revisiting a Smoking Haunt

This weekend we had to drop everything and drive two hours to the closest Children's Hospital. My son's feeding tube button broke and the clock was ticking for getting proper nutrition and hydration into him. All ended well but it threw me for a huge nic fit smackdown.

Rewind a little: Last year at that same hospital was when I had to admit to myself and everyone else that yes, I was smoking again. It was on the admission parent questionaire if there were any smokers that lived with my son. Okay, so the cat was out of the bag then. I had only been sneaking one or two a night at that point.

Back to Saturday...it was a test of how quickly we could drop everything and activate our emergency hospital stay plans. Overall, it was a good test. My son wasn't in any distress (other than IV insertion) but it was more of getting some hardware fixed. The upheaval of the weekend (as today is his IEP, so I have not had proper time to prepare this weekend)...needless to say, I was chomping at the bit for a smoke. I reflexively asked my husband to drive us all to the hospital. Selfishly, it was because I couldn't trust myself not to buy a pack and start smoking again. (I didn't tell him that bit of it.)

After things were settled down and we found out the button couldn't be replaced until Monday afternoon, all we had to do was play the waiting game. I kept busy and enjoyed the time alone with my son. Dad and daughter went back home until yesterday and had some quality bonding time there.

Another positive: all I know is I didn't smoke.

Good job Jennifer! Caring for a sick or disabled child has got to be one of the all-time stressors. You did just fine. Wishing you and your family well.

Thanks everyone. Feeling better and a bit more accomplished today. Kiddo Number One is doing great with his shiny new button. Jeff, do I get to wear a funky vinyl mask? Is the fight held inside an octagon or a giant rectangle? X-)
