I can relate, I work in a Nursing home and see the effects of life long smokers every day.  The COPD, emphysema, lung cancer, throat cancer.  I do not want to be the old lady in the wheelchair hooked to the oxyagen bottle demanding to be taken outside and 10 p.m. in 30 degree weather for a final smoke of the night.

I agree with so many of your reasons, most of them are my reasons too! How long have you been smoking?

Hey, I'm really into the whole holistic thing as well. I'm totally familiar with the condundrum of practincing a holistic lifestyle and continuing to smoke. Good job on deciding to quit. I'm relatively fresh on my journey escaping smokes. Anyways, one resource given to me by someone on the board is this link.

It really helped. Also, I was reading "Anatomy of the Spirit" by Caroline Myss, who talks about how we may be ready to change, but our energy is more or less patterned. WIth that in mind, It may be helpful to be mindful of our energy patterns rather than the bad habit.

How about the offense it causes to other people, strangers as well as family members?  I used to be a nun and missionary and gained a lot of respect from other people -- not the reason I did it and I would never admit it -- but now with being a smoker, everyone I know hates me, it seems, and gives me very dirty looks instead of a bow of the head or a smile.  Sure has changed my relationships status.

Many of those are my reasons for trying to quit. My main one though is because I don't want to get cancer. There are different forms of cancer in my genes and my brother was just diagnosed with cancer of the larynx. WAYYY too close for comfort. A couple of my family members are trying to quit too. hopefully we succeed.

About the offenses of others - I have always been considerate and moved away from non-smokers and children but i don't care what they may think. When I decided to quit I decided to do it for myself, not others. That is the way I hope to succeed.

I love your list and it seems to be every reason I want to quit. I feel like such a punk because of how I let these things control my life for sooo long. I want my life back.  Thank you for shareing that with us.

Great list! most of those are my reasons too... my most important reason is because I have a little girl who is 5, and I want my time with here to be better, (more energy, more time with her, more money to spend on fun things to do) and just to be alive for longer.. I'm 43 and already been diagnosed with emphysema. I can't wait to quit!!
