Hi. Today is my first attempt at quitting and I'm getting so stressed out. Any advice on how to make this easier? I don't want to do anymore harm to my unborn baby. Thanks.

I assume you are quitting without a nicotine aid

let us know so we know how we can help you.

If you are not using an nrt, the nicotine will be out of your body in three days.

the first 2-3 weeks is like having a real bad cold as far as misery level.

don't keep any around.

common sense.

believe you can do it. a number of us were able to quit the first time so don't be brainwashed. I smoked for 40 years.

I also quit the first time - so don't be brainwashed that it is SOOOO difficult.  It is not easy, but it IS doable - I also smoked for 40 years and had never tried to quit before, so brainwashe had I been that it was not possible!!

You do need to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your mind and body.  A lot of people here give credit to the following sources of information:  whyquit.com, quitsmokingonline.com and Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.:  Here is a link to a free PDF version of the book:

You really need to do the reading.  After, you will come up with your plan.  I would talk to your doctor about what quitting aids might be available to you (I have no idea if you can use anything).  Lots of folks on here have been successful with the "cold turkey" method - so don't be too distressed if that is your only option.

The idea will be to distract yourself through the craves in the early days.  The argument in your head cannot be:"I want a cigarette. No.  But, I WANT a cigarette.  NO!"  It needs to be"  I want a cigarette.  Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this craving will last?"  And then DO it.  If you need some ideas, there are lists of 114 things to do instead of smoke on my page (originally compiled by aztec).

You CAN do this and we can help!  Ask for advice and support as you need it......we will be here for you.

It really helps to know how nicotine works in your body and how to counteract the changes your body will go through when you quit smoking.  So, I recommend that you do the lessons at quitsmokingonline.com and read and view the videos at whyquit.com.  Also, everyone here recommends that you read Allen Carr's book.  Someone should be along to post a link to that book.

Also keep reading the blogs and comments on this site.  You'll find there are a lot of good people here to help you quit successfully.  Blog whenever you have a question or any problems.

You can do this!!!  You'll be so glad you found this site.  I was.  I never thought I could quit smoking, but found this site and the others and I'm now on day 86.  If you do the reading, it'll be a whole lot easier than you ever could have imagined.  Not that it won't be trying at times, but it won't be anything you can't handle because you'll be prepared for it.
