Quitting Smoking and Thyroid Issues

A recent post had me researching this topic and I found some interesting articles/studies on it.

"The current studies found that nicotine withdrawal reduces secreted thyroid hormone levels by 9% in C57BL/6J mice."

"PARIS – Smokers who have recently kicked the habit could face a significant increase in the risk of developing new-onset hypothyroidism.  The risk is greatest within the first 2 years of quitting, when it can run as high as 5 times the risk of someone who has never smoked..."

Weight Gained after Smoking Cessation May Be Caused by Onset of Hypothyroidism

Thank you for posting this.

I am always hungry and it's a joke that I have a killer metabolism or I'd be as big as an elephant.

I have quit smoking before and always gained weight. So I figured it was just something to get over.

I hunkered down for my latest quit, determined that I wasnt going to worry about weight gain or cravings. As so many said, it's better than lung issues, copd, etc.

As the weight and eating continued in an unhealthy way, i was convinced something was wrong. I didnt feel great at all with any of my quits. I'm skinny-ish so I can handle 25 lbs,  but in 5 months?!?

I went to the doctor, i didnt feel like i wanted to feel with extra oxygen. I should have perked up, i feel like I'm about to fall over all the time.

I did realize that I am experiencing hypothyroidism. I am choosing to monitor and manage by diet. Well see what I'll need to do later. I want to see if it will level out. I wish I would have known and been prepared for this possibilty. I would have managed some things differently.

Thanks Nancy.   I've been posting this information since March because it happened to me.  Quitters should get checked if they continue to gain weight.

About the Author
I smoked until a vascular surgeon informed me of the damage I had done to myself by doing so. I quit 11 years ago, and I can swim laps virtually FOREVER now, walk most other days 40 minutes to an hour and a half. What a difference quitting has made in my life! I strive to help others find this wonderful freedom from addiction, too.
