Excellent suggestions, I have used most of them and distraction seems to be the key, the craves WILL pass whether you smoke or not.

Elvan Yep distraction is the key and the craves do pass. It seems like the crave will never stop when we are having one but they do.

Really like this list!

How about the car? Well, I quit just before Mardi Gras, so I bought some strands of shimmering plastic beads to hang from the rearview mirror, and to wrap around the gear shift. A feastive burst of color can remind a driver of their quit, and beads like these can be found year-round at dollar stores. Use favorite music CDs/mp3s for distractions (sing out loud!) and air freshening sprays for quick bursts of soothing aromatherapy. Also, many chewing gums and mints now come in a plastic container designed to fit in the cupholders in cars.

Storm these are really good suggestions.

Thanks for posting them.

Get a small cooler, make it part of your routine to pack it with water, ice and some crunchy veggies. Take this kit with you everywhere. I lived with my six pack cooler for three months. My go to when I was hungry, tired.... Just look out for yourself, realize you need to be prepared.

Moody this is an excellent suggestion with the cooler filled with water, ice and crunchy veggies.  I see people all the time saying they are very hungry when they quit smoking and don’t want to gain weight and crunchy veggies are great to fill up on. Thank you for posting your suggestion.

I found that a frozen Hershey Kiss did the trick with my coffee in the morning!  Hardly missed that first cigarette at all!

Great blog Legend! I hope you don't mind it being re-posted a bunch!!!

I will put in my 2 cents of favorite 'craving kickers' even with a couple repeats:Craving Kickers

Did you know most cravings only last 3 to 5 minutes?

20 Craving Kickers

1. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, “What do I really want right now?” Keep asking yourself the question til you figure out what you really need right now (probably not really a smoke).

2. Drink a glass of water.

3. Call a friend.

4. Write down 3 things you are grateful for in your life.

5. Do 25 jumping jacks.

6. Take a 3-5 minute walk.

7. Go brush your teeth.

8. Paint your nails. (OK Guys TRIM your nails!)

9. Get a jar of bubbles and go blow bubbles

10. Play your favorite music and dance for a bit.

11. Write down 3 reasons you want to be smoke free.

12. Chomp on some raw veggies or fruit. The crunchier the better!

13. Cut a straw into the length of a cigarette and chew on it. Or use a cinnamon stick.

14. Get out some paper and doodle.

16. Take 5 minutes and write yourself a love note.

17. Do a crossword puzzle or Sudoku.

18. Imagine how you will feel tonight knowing you made it another day smoke-free!

19. Find a video on YouTube that makes you laugh. Congrats, you made it!

20. Look in the mirror and tell yourself “I love you and I will take care of you”.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and reminders.  I still dip into that quit kit when I am having a particularly difficult day...it's kind of a "COPE kit."

Twizzlers

Legend
Member

annalea Thanks for your input I love twizzlers. Twizzlers can keep your hand and mouth busy.  I like the strawberry and cherry twizzlers. My package of strawberry twizzlers says on the package 4 pieces has 19 g of sugar.  I cut one piece in half and it is just the right size for my hand and not going to jack me up on a big sugar rush like soda does or some candy.

Last time I quit I eat stick pretzels and used peppermint and

butterscotch. I also was on the patch. How can i get the patches?

Cowgirlup6171 Pretzels sounds like a good idea to keep your hands and mouth busy and not smoke along with the peppermints and butterscotch. I always try to find the sugar free candy if I can find it but not everyone can eat that if gives them stomach problems.

I know I have seen the patches at Walmart and Walgreens pharmacy. If you can’t find them the pharmacist can tell you what section they are in.

I also looked on this site for an answer and found someone had asked where to get the patch and here is the link to that conversation just scroll down the page on this link and read all of the comments.

Here is another link I found on this site about finding patches read the comments on this conversation.

I hope this helped you and you have a nice day.

A narrow straw (cocktail type), cut to a short length, on an angle.  I use it to clean my teeth and just play with (chew on it, suck on it).  It satisfies the hand-to-mouth connection and keeps my mouth busy, rather than eating.

I was doing pretty well avoiding a strong urge to eat too much, but I may be developing a dependence to M&M's.  Ack!!  Quick, give me another straw!!

elvan
Member

SighofRelief‌ My thing was Sour Patch Kids...I ate so many of them that my tongue and the roof of my mouth were constantly sore.  When I was a kid, my mom used to give each of us kids 10 M&M's at a time as a treat...not sure what made me think of that but it is a very vivid memory and now, it makes me laugh.  If I ever gave 10 M&M's to my kids when they were younger, they would have looked at me like I had two heads.  Funny how things change.

Hand to mouth was big for me...I tried straws, didn't work.  It actually was more helpful for me to put my hand to my mouth as though I had a cigarette and then breath in like I was inhaling smoke and exhale like I was letting it out.  I only used it when I was really triggered but it did work.

Welcome to EX.

SighofRelief Thanks for putting your suggestion on here that sounds good a narrow straw it’s better than eating everything in sight. M&M’s sure can be addicting they are so good. I’m handing you a hand full of straws here grab onto them.

elvan I have never had a sour patch kid candy thanks for adding that to the list here for others to try. I have had a sweet and sour sucker that was pretty good. Maybe someday I might buy some sour patch kid candy just to see what they taste like.

elvan

They are hard to describe but they are REALLY sour and I LOVED them, haven't eaten any in quite a while.  I think they scare me now...my poor mouth.

Legend

elvan Now for sure I have to have a sour patch kid I'm curious. This sounds like it might taste good with some lemonade.

elvan

elvan I got some sour patch kids berries flavor and they are really good I like them but they are really packed with sugar I could only have a few.

elvan

I didn't care about the sugar...I got the bags that were all different flavors and they smacked the craves right out of my head...probably along with my teeth.
