Quit Day Coming Up

Wednesday, September 11th is my quit day.

To prepare for the big day, I've hung sheets of paper around my room.  They read, "There is nothing good about smoking," and "Smoking does nothing for me."

I will use the patch and tomorrow will stock up on more patches. Also tomorrow, I will move my lighters to a different area of my apartment. I will be learning Tai Chi, will meditate more often, will chew gum, will write and read whenever I feel the urge.  When that devil of a thing, social anxiety gets a hold of me, I won't reach for a cigarette, but will draw deep breaths in then out cherishing my ability to breathe and to be alive.  I will avoid my usual smoking spots: the corner outside the coffee shop.  The back alley fence post.  My friend's back porch.  Outside the grad school I recently graduated from.

A life without smoking will be a new and better life.  On quit day, I will do laundry with a giddy step listening to my favorite hippie 60s jams.  Folding my t-shirts, I will put them to my nose, smell the freshness of soapy suds.

When I leave my apartment for the day, people will actually be able to smell that brush of Polo cologne on my lapel.  My breath will smell of Crest toothpaste, and in a week or so, I'll be able to taste food.  My skin will be smoother, will no longer be morphing into a baseball glove.  And what I'm most looking forward to . . . when I'm outside, I won't have to worry about blowing smoke in people's faces.  Feeling guilty about smoking near other people.  Asking if it's okay if I smoke when I'm with a friend or on a date.  I won't have to worry about smelling like smoke going into a job interview.  It creates more anxiety than it alleviates.

I'm done for now.

Looking forward to Wednesday.

Welcome fellow Chicagoan!  You sound ready! I highly recommend reading Allen Carr’s, The Easy Way.  Completely changed the way I thought of smoking.

I'm not a Chicagoan anymore as I now live south of i80 (near Starved Rock). Welcome to the community. Illinois provides free patches if you call the Illinois quit line.

In addition to Allen Carr's book, I would suggest heading over to whyquit.com, a lock of good facts that helped me in my quit. Add always, keep the Sexy Exers close and you will be quit in no time!

Congratulations on making the decision to quit and setting a date. Sounds to me you have an EXcellent plan and a vision of what you EXpect quitting to be. Good job on the preparation.   Quitting is a process which takes time for the mind to make a change in the behavior.  It is a journey one day at a time. Tell yourself that you just don't do that anymore between those deep breaths.  Come here first and above all https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/newbie-quitters/blog/2019/08/14/keep-it-simple?sr=search&s...

I just have ONE question.  Why are you keeping the lighters?  Are they going to be out of sight, out of mind or are you subconsciously keeping if you need them?  Even though it may seem small a lighter can be a trigger early in your quit if not mentally prepare so make sure they are completely out of sight. Sleeping enough, eating well and exercise are tied into having a solid quit. Make your quit day a day WON.  Stay close. Please be flexible to use the comments and suggestions that may be helpful to you. We are here to support you.  Let's Do This!

And, most important, you will come here and blog about how you are doing, and you will receive much hope and encouragement. I was on here several times a day my first couple of weeks. All your ideas sound fantastic though as is your attitude.

tevans0919 and Kimmypage    Welcome to EX, education about this addiction is seriously helpful...understanding that it is an addiction is helpful.  I got rid of everything that reminded me of smoking...including 8 packs of cigarettes in a carton, I doused an open pack under the faucet and tore the cigarettes apart.  I felt it was somehow very cathartic.  I got rid of all lighters, my ashtrays were all outside since I did not smoke in the house so I threw them away, along with my butt can.  There was not a trace of anything in my house that reminded me of smoking.  I changed my morning routine, stopped drinking coffee because I was afraid that it was a trigger...turns out it wasn't since I never smoked in the house and I never took my coffee outside.  I came to EX every morning and I read blogs, I commented, I paid attention to what was working with others.  I asked for advice and when it was given, I accepted it.  I wanted SO MUCH to quit and to stay quit and I finally understood that for me, it really was a matter of life or breath.  I had gotten very sick and along with COPD, I had pneumonia, I will never be able to breathe like I used to.  COPD is progressive and irreversible.  If I had found a way to quit years ago, I might not be going through this.  Aside from being short of breath, I am overwhelmed with fatigue and that might be the hardest thing to deal with.  I identified all of my triggers and rated them on a level of one to five with five being the strongest and then I listed things I could PLAN to do instead of smoke.  I knew the triggers would keep coming and I had to be flexible enough to change my plans as necessary.  I counted on this site and the people here to explain to me what to expect and to support me when I asked, they never disappointed me.  The final thing for me was my commitment not to smoke, no matter what.  I had LOTS of no matter whats happen but I did not smoke, I had come to realize that smoking never did anything FOR me, only TO me and I was NOT going to keep allowing that to happen.  It has been over 5 1/2 years since I stopped smoking and I have never regretted my quit, I have only regretted not quitting earlier.  You CAN do this.  One day at a time and sometimes one FEELING at a time.

Wow, thank you so much for the time and effort it took you to write this comment.  It's putting things into perspective for me, and I'm sorry for what you've had to go through.  But yes, it's so good that you quit, and your words give me faith and confidence that I will too!

Thank you everyone for your enormous response!  It's amazing how people you haven't met before care so much to say such wonderful things.  With your helpful words, I feel even more prepared than yesterday.  To answer some questions, I'll first say that I've tried to quit smoking several times.  The most successful being for 2 years, another time for a year and a half, and two other times being for 3 months.  For the first few times, I did read Allen Carr's EasyWay.  I've read it so many times now that I basically have it memorized haha.  The first time it helped tremendously but recently due to having trouble staying quit, I've realized I need to take from it what's helped me and leave what hasn't helped me.  The lighter/s I was going to just move to another area because I burn incense.  It helps to relax me, and I'd use that as a replacement for smoking too.  I guess though I could use matches to light incense.  After all, I never use a match to light a cigarette (especially not in the Windy City).  So will throw out the lighters!

Thank you everyone again.  Your support has been tremendous, and I'll be sure to keep on coming back to the Ex Community.

I burned incense also.  I just wanted you to be aware it could be a trigger. Its up to you.  I think you are making a wise decision.  Seems small but important. See you tomorrow.  Welcome Again.

Today is your quit day!! What a wonderful day!! It's going to be hard but also it's going to feel good! Be kind to yourself today, your body is working hard to heal!

I love your plan for today. Smell is a big thing deal for me, too. I went out and bought a bunch of nice smelling hand lotions so my hands smell delicious instead of like nicotine.

Congratulations!! You can do it!!

Ya'll....in preping for today, I've been cutting back on cigs since 9/4.... And, I'm going to dentist to get teeth cleaned today, but last night, my neck glands hurt.... I hope it's just my body trying to convince me to keep smoking... My instinct is telling me "it's your cancer, you can feel it now that the lighter smoking is reveiling it now"...

I'm a little late to this party, Todd, but congratulations on Day 2.  I smoked heavily for over 50 years, and I am coming up to five years quit.  There are many wonderful things about this community, but I have realized that another benefit of coming to EX is this:  when we first quit many of us have a thought loop -- "I want to smoke, I want to smoke, I want to smoke . . ." on and on.  During those early days we're thinking about smoking constantly.  So coming to EX allows us to think about smoking in a healthy way.  Instead of listening to our own addict's voice, we hear encouragement, and get educated, and even have some laughs.  I blogged every single day for my first year, and I am certain that this site made the difference.  I will never smoke another cigarette -- Not One Puff Ever = NOPE!  You can do this and we're here for you 24/7.

Sorry you relapsed, but glad you're back on track.  You did amazing quitting cold turkey for 3 days, so now you know you can dot it.   Honestly, smoking can mask physical and emotional issues, but even with that being said, not smoking is so much better for your health and your state of mind.  I think we all worry about some smoking relate illness, so that's a reason to quit now and hope for the best.   And, everyone does not get cancer!

We're here to support you, so reach out next time before you smoke.  Give us a chance to help you get through.

YoungAtHeart‌ usually posts a warning before the weekend for new quitters; to protect that quit you may want to consider slowly introducing alcohol back as it clouds your judgement.

Glad to hear you're back at it! Great job getting back on the horse!
