Nothing is going right at the moment. My brother is going in for open heart surgery now. They had to get him stable first because he has high blood sugar and had to thin his blood out some and now he is headed into surgery for open heart surgery that is all I know at the moment. Only one vein is working at the moment for him. Any prayers will be appreciated. He would not stop smoking and now he might die. I hate this addiction.

Update: Wednesday September 28, 2016 10:36pm central time

Everything is getting worse tonight. The doctor was talking about doing the open heart surgery and now they can’t because my brother is not stable enough. The doctor told him if he had not come in when he did then he would have died. They are keeping my brother in the hospital and they are going to try and wait a week to get him more stable and healthier his blood pressure is not good and his blood sugar is high.  My brother is going through withdrawals from smoking also. The doctors told my brother he is going to have to quit smoking. I gave my niece the easy way to quit smoking book to give to him tomorrow with the CD in the back of the book so he could read it maybe he will listen to her. I was told 3 of his veins are blocked and the 4th one is partially blocked. They will for sure need to take a vein from another part of his body for sure the doctor said. He is sweating really bad and I don’t know if that is from the diabetes or the withdrawals from cigarettes or the heart attack or from everything going on. I am emotionally exhausted.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Update: Friday September 30, 2016 at 7:55pm central time.

I had at first typed in for the update time Friday September 30, 2016 at 8:85pm central time that was the twilight zone time I guess at 7:85pm LOL.

The hospital is going to let him go home today and rest and he will sometime within a week get the open heart surgery. The doctors said he was stable enough now today to rest at home for now. My nieces are watching over him. Hopefully he will be ok at home for now until the surgery. I feel a little more relieved he is stable enough to rest at home. Thank you for all of your prayers I really do appreciate them all.

Prayers

Many prayers to you Christine.  Maybe, when they get in there, they will be able to put in stents and not have to do full blown by pass but if they DO have to do by pass, it is considerably more successful now than even a few years ago and he could live a long life past the surgery.  Perhaps, who knows, it MIGHT make him stop smoking.  I know of more than one person who quit after heart surgery, our mortality becomes very real when we come face to face with the possibility that we might not make it and it MIGHT be because of our own choices.  We are here for you, Christine, saying prayers, sending love and hugs. Do keep us posted and DO take care of yourself, you have had such a rough time.  I think this addiction is so insidious that we should all be terrified of it ever entering our lives again.  I know I am.

Hugs dear lady!

Hi Christine, healing thoughts and prayers coming your way!

Please keep the hope;  a friend of mine (56 years old) had a heart attack while traveling for work.  He drove himself to the hospital, and they put 4 stents in his heart.  He was to follow up here in Phoenix and have 3 more.  But when they examined him, and probably as a consequence of the heart attack, they decided to do open heart surgery.  He had 4 by-passes last week and is now comfortably recovering at home.

Heart surgeons are so qualified these days, your brother will be well.

And to echo Ellen, yes Christine, my friend was also a smoker and he quit cold turkey after the heart attack, did not even think twice about it, nor did he complain of any cigarettes missing from his life!

Christine I am so sorry to hear your brother going through this.  It is hard to see our loved ones sick but like Ellen said they have come a very long way with heart surgeries and bypasses. Hopefully he will quit smoking after all of this. I am sending prayers up for your brother, you and family for strength, healing and guidance of doctors skills to het him to recovery phase. Big  Hugs to you.

Chris, I have type 1 diabetes and have for 30 years. I had quadruple cardiac surgery in 2004. I never admitted to my doctors that I smoked, and I did not quit until just 6 months ago. By the way, I don't have one vein functioning except for the mammary artery they used to bypass one of my arteries. I have asked how my heart is receiving blood. I've been told collateral arteries have assumed that function. Please contact me if you want further info. Gayle
