Paying it Forward/NML

I'm doing the NML segment for Sarah this week. So without further ado here is her beautifully selected words.

One of the many changes you will go through in NML is the shift from asking for help to giving help. You will find yourself commenting on the blog of someone newer than you, giving them hope and advice, cheering them on. This is an exciting shift, but also a strange one-- you may feel you're not qualified to help someone else, maybe because you feel so "new" yourself.

Quitting smoking is a journey, not an event. Although we each take a slightly different path, everyone who succeeds ends up in the same place-happily smoke-free. But quitting isn't easy, and virtually no one's quit is problem-free. So hang in there. Before you know it, you'll be giving advice instead of asking for it, and helping that next generation of new quitters as they start their journey. That's how we pay it forward.

Let's hear from everyone in NML-have you experienced this yet? Have you helped a newer quitter? How did it feel?

Yep.  I've offered a leg up here and there.  I still do it some.  There have been a few instances where I was told it was genuinely helpful.  How did it feel?

1)  It helps my quit.  Keeps me focussed and mindful which is the great pitfall of my No Man's Land experience - that it becomes difficult to remain mindful.

2)  When I wander too far into the Advisor role, I feel pretentious.  There's a temptation to believe I know more about the other person than I really know.  That creeps me out, so I back away.

From a new returning quitter- I find this interesting because I am not there yet, but I still have ideas from the wealth of experience I have trying to quit in the past.  So I feel great when I have the chance to share it.  When I receive advice or assistance from people I always feel stronger, and less alone.  No need to feel pretentious:)  Its always welcome and almost always helpful to me to receive mentoring!

Great words....  I had 'heard' of NML when I joined here...but never fathomed it would actually be true.  It's true.  I'm here..... and it IS a weird place.... somewhere right inbetween "Hi...I'm New...... and Hi... I know what I'm talking about"

I have a very Dear Friend who has been wanting to quit.  I talked to her about this site... all the wonderful, wise and supportive peole here..... and she joined.... she quit..... and I am thrilled for her.  We are all walking the same path... each one of us....to a different tune.

It feels good to help someone who is just getting started...to let them know that each day will be better.  I am in the middle of NML and now I am more in control....feel peaceful and calm...it really is a nice place to be.

It feels very weird, why should I give help advice to someone else, if not further along in this quit, and I don't know enough about what i'm talking about. Specially if I had problems with my quit or have health problems.  But I'm glad others have me along this prosess. Althought the site lately has not always let me post what I blog mabey I don't have the right things to say thanks for not letting hurt others.

no mans land is from the end of the first month through the next hundred days.

it is the time you are learning how to live life without smoking and the time you are most vulnerable to failing.
