On the nature of substitute addictions…

I never really had issues with eating junk food until I quit smoking.

Over the last 11 months though, junk food has become a direct substitute addiction and I’m finding it hard to break.

On the plus side, it reminds me just how hard it is to get any quit off the ground and so it helps to solidify my nicotine quit.

On the negative side, I’m putting on the pounds (again) and need to deal with it.

I took up martial arts (as a different form of exercise) about a month ago. I’ve noticed that power walking burns up way more calories than martial arts (at least for me).

I’m not sure whether I should ditch the kung fu and go back to power walking or ditch the kung fu and take up sumo wrestling 🙂

In the meantime, this song says it way better than I ever could.

Enjoy and Never Take Another Puff!!!

I feel your pain Chuck. I have put on around 20 lbs. It seems to have stopped, but I really need to get back into an exercise routine. Junk food has always been my downfall.

Hey Chuck --

I'm a junk food junkie too! For good or bad, I've always been overweight, and the quit definitely packed on about another 15 pounds.

I really didn't care though. Only because I am willing to do whatever it takes to keep this quit. Bring on the cheddar cheese popcorn, Junior Mints, and anything my heart desires, I say.

Well, miraculously, the pounds have started coming off now. I've lost more than I gained - at last! In part because some of those chips and things just don't taste the same anymore 🙂

But if that's not the case for you -- just keep in mind that the weight loss at my ripe old age has just made me one flabby ole gal with that waddle under my chin.

It's always something, eh? Give me the waddle any day 🙂

I hear you, Chuck. I've gained 12 pounds on top of 5 I gained over a very long depressing winter. What I've been shocked to find out is that my idea of a portion is way off. I measured my granola this morning and found it was twice what a serving should be. Interesting and a little dismaying. I also do mindless snacking (total amnesia there). I joined a website for calorie counting but it's too complicated to enter the calories, so maybe a pad and pen?
