Oh, to hell with the Patch Rules

Due to circumstances beyond my control, and lately I'm finding most circumstances are, I had to accelerate my quit with the patch. I was supposed to use 21 mg patches for 4 weeks, but I started using 14 mgs on the 3rd week instead. I stayed on 14mg for 2 weeks until they were gone, but I didn't have any 7mg patches (I didn't have the heart to tell my Blue Cross Insurance coach that I've been messin' with the whole program, she's unaware that I would need the 7mg yet) so I started cutting up my left-over 21 mg patches into 10.5 mg (or thereabouts, depending on the accuracy of my scissors). If you read the directions, it states quite clearly on the box DO NOT CUT PATCHES. I'm here to tell ya, I did it and I LIVED! I used my half-patches for a week, then figuring 10.5 mgs of nicotine, more or less, delivered over the course of 24 hrs is not going to fool my poor addicted nervous system anyhow, I discontinued using patches altogether 2 days ago.

So, there's no gradual stepping down for this kid, we've gotta TUMBLE!!! YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Warning: New People Using the Patch to quit - DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME. See, normal people can follow simple programs to quit smoking and be quite happy and successful in doing so. Normal people can read and follow the instructions on the box and stick to the plan for the duration.

I CAN'T EVEN FOLLOW THE RULES FOR 4 WEEKS!!!

I'm feeling pretty good I must say, though I don't want to be a bad influence here. I've been 35 days without a smoke, but only 2 without nicotine, so I'm experiencing the foggies as well as stronger craves, and the occaisional bitch-on-wheels syndrome my husband can now spot at fifty paces. I know this is actual physical withdrawl, and I know too that it should last for less than a week. Still, in a perfect world I would have stuck to the plan, just for once anyway.

Hey Laura!
This sounds something like I would do!! In fact, did....LOL!! I guess I'm not normal either but that's ok. I've been smoke free for over 16 months, so I guess it worked and I lived!! Your right, we shouldn't condone this kind of behavior to encourage others not to follow directions. I guess we are just doing our own thing....that's what makes each of us unique...
Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR TWO DAY QUIT!!!

Well I was just sure that if I cut the patch something awful would happen, like all the nicotine would run into my skin at once and I'd have a heart attack or maybe cut the patch and break your mama's back...what the heck!!! What is up with the cryptic warnings???!
Becky it's good to see 16 months later that all is better than well with you!
Jennie, I am convinced the physical is not nearly as bad as the mental, and the patch really worked well for getting me out of the head-habit. Thanks to you both!

Thanks hothula, I am honored to have a comment from you, by the way. But are you saying that pharmaceutical companies might be greedy? Nah, say it isn't so!

I have to laugh Laura......the Nicotine would run into your skin? Heck, it was already running into your skin! I figured I had half the chance of having a heart attack!! I saved myself a lot of money by cutting everything in half, quarters, etc. Geez....I wasn't going to give those Pharmaceutical Companies any more than I had to. I like Chemicals as much as the other guy, but I give them enough as it is!
You are right Hothula we do have to do what works for us and I liked the Patch because that way I was able to keep my friends, since I live alone with my dog. Poor pooch she didn't know what to make of me. I think my neighbors appreciated it too.

i used 10 patches over the first 14 days.

Sone days I forgot and just rode it out and lived it.

Thats what you have to do sooner or later.

You can get to where you control it within a fairly short time and pretty much rule it after 120 or 139 days

Just hang in there. Its honestly 95% mental anyway.
