No Man's Land Weekly Blog -- Sudden Stress

We do this blog every Wednesday afternoon to offer encouragement to those in No Man’s Land -- months 2-3-4 of a quit, give or take a couple of weeks. This community has chosen to put a big, bright spotlight on NML – we’ve chased away the shadows, taken away the mystery, and put a lot of effort into bringing people in NML together. Because we understand that quitting isn’t over in a month.

Everyone who goes through NML blazes a trail for those that follow. You are not alone on this journey, and you never will be!

This week’s topic: Sudden Stress

For so many years or even decades, we associated smoking with stress relief. In times of stress your brain is going to gravitate toward what it knows. That’s not something you can change in just a couple of months. So plan ahead – when a major stress hits you, how will you defeat the urge to smoke? What will you say to yourself, what action will you take, to drive away the sudden and powerful belief your brain will have, seemingly out of nowhere, that a cigarette would be helpful?  PRACTICE it now, so you’re prepared when it happens!

Sudden stress = smoking thought = acknowledge = dismiss

“Yes I acknowledge that part of me thinks I want a cigarette. But, I don’t want all the other cigarettes that would come with it. I also realize this is just my addiction attacking me in a weak moment. So there’s no point in dwelling on this thought. Instead, I’m going to turn my attention back toward resolving this stressful situation.”

Quitting smoking is a skill, and like any other skill, it takes practice. As you progress through No Man’s Land, you will put all of your new skills to work!

If you're in NML right now, give a shout!  Reach out and find each other!

Love your weekly blogs. At just over 100 days I think I see an oasis on the horizon or is it just a mirage? LOL So much of what you put in these NML blogs can serve as reminders for even long time quitters. May we never grow complacent but always guard our quits. Thank you Sarah

This is an area that I have to admit I have some "stress" about.     Lost a few months quit several years ago when my sister was hit by a car and needed a hip replacement.    Now why would me having a cigarette (and all those that followed) have changed that she broke her hip?????   It didn't.

I have alot of stress with my work.     I could lose a client to death....will that send me to smoking?

I have 2 older sisters, one in not good health....could I lose my quit if something happens to them?

Or maybe to 1 of my kids....

The list could be endless.    I just have to remember that I make a promise each day...first on this site to pledge NOPE and also to myself that I would yell out a HELP before I actually put one of the nasties in my mouth......

Love your blogs Sarah,   they make me think and give me a chance to test out some of my thoughts.

Sarah, NML is a place you have to travel through to get here! It really isn't painful, nor does it ask anything of you but to stay smoke-free. It's the place that I personally got to make a new and improved way of life for myself. I practiced being a non-smoker and enjoyed the process. It can get slippery at times but you come out the other side with more clarity. Like every stage of our quits, always protect them.

I have 30 days in! Yippee! I also want to say that family and friends support kind of gets quiet and yet I continue to need support ,so I find myself getting kind of bitter about this but I am not giving in !
