Nicotine Addiction Recovery Meditation -- Day 85 (Repost)

Some time has passed and there are a bunch of new people in the community, so perhaps there is an audience for these meditations again.  Anyhow, repeating some of them can't hurt, can it?

This is another meditation from Karen Casey’s book, If Only I Could Quit: Recovering from Nicotine Addiction.  As the saying goes, “Take what you need and leave the rest.”

DAY 85

“Even now, after ten years, if I were to have one, I know I’d start smoking again.”

Forever, I need to be vigilant over the urge for a single cigarette, even a single puff.  For us addicted smokers, there is no such thing as “just one.”  Many of us had to learn and relearn that lesson many times in the past.  Let’s not relearn it again today.

Being glad I don’t smoke, and wanting just one, is not an unusual circumstance. To get me through a momentary longing, I quietly pray I can remember the benefits that accompany the choice I’ve made to be free from tobacco.  I am healthier.  I do smell better.  I have more time for friends, personal goals, and fun.

I’ll be in charge of my life today.  I’ll not give my power over to tobacco.

So true.  Even now, after 7 years if I were to have one I'd be hooked, lined and sunk back to another Day One all over again.  I wouldn't call it vigilant (that makes it sound rather oppressive and constantly immediate to my mind.  Like we always have to be in full armor en garde!)  Rather I'd call it "mindfulness."  A background wakefulness of awareness about the fragility of our quits, or to put it another way - the strength of the addiction.  I hope I've finally gotten the lesson down pat!  Thanks for this reposting, Sheryl.  'Taint only the newbies that need to re-read this material.

Thank you Sheryl.  We all need reminders now and then.

Sheryl this post speaks to me today. It's amazing the resilence we must have to resist the temptation to smoke again and to remain conscious of our goal. My mind is playing tricks on me. "Come on, just one more pack." "One a day isn't bad." "Just one a day." I think back over the many times I walked to the gas station or around town or around my campus to find someone with a smoke. I think about the conversations I have walked away from to smoke. I feel so much more awake now. It's scary to think this feeling will remain.

i think i might need one in each hand and one in each nostril and perhaps one between my toes to become hooked again but, i have no doubt i'd remember how to smoke.

and that would be a bad thing
