NECESSARY STRUGGLES

Owlfeather blogged today about loving to watch all of the butterflies emerge here at EX................. so this is a "tag on" to Owl's blog.

You want your quit to be easy? You don't like the struggle of quitting---you just want to be done? Here's a story that is food for thought.....

One day, a small boy saw a caterpillar/butterfly struggling to emerge from the stickiness and tight wrappings of the cocoon. Feeling sorry for the insect,  the boy got some scissors and cut away the remnants of the cocoon, freeing the butterfly. The butterfly looked kind of funny---it had a huge, bloated body and very small wings. After a few moments, the poor butterfly died.

Distraught, the child ran crying to his father who explained that the struggle the child had sought to help with was really very necessary. As a butterfly battles to emerge from the cocoon, the struggle pushes the fluid out of the body and into the wings...expanding them and making them ready for flight. It also rids the body of the bloating fluid allowing the butterfly to breathe.

So too are life's struggles necessary AND the struggle to quit smoking. While it would be nice if it were easy---would you value your quit as highly? Would you do everything you can to protect it if it were just so easy to quit?

Struggle on fellow EXERS----there is nothing wrong with needing to work at something and give it your all. ....as the butterfly knows, struggle is life.

What a beautiful story.  The struggle of quitting and emerging from the cocoon of nicotine makes us value our quit so much more than we would if it were very easy.

Great story Sootie! The things most easily won seem to have little value! I value my time, and my life enough to fight for it! Our strength comes from our struggles! Struggle on my friends! For when the battle is over the rest will be that much sweeter!

Awesome blog Sootie.  How great is this especially for newbies, but also a reminder to those of us past NML of how precious this forever quit is to us. I definitely do not want to repeat what I fought for and won.

Thanks for this.

Isn't it wonderful that blogs never die.  And we can come upon them by happy accident days later, perhaps just when they're most needed.  Growth seems to be a painful process.  But if we never go through metamorphosis, we never see the person we can become.  Wings are odd things, until you get used to them.    Great blog, Sootie.

An excellent metaphor to describe the sometimes painful proccess of quitting smoking. As the caterpillar struggles at first, the moment before it becomes relieved of it's burden and will value the post-freedom more than if it were easier. Well explained, no matter how many times the quit is tried, it can be a painful thing indeed.

Such a wonderful story! You really are very inspiring! So true that we take the things that come easy for granted and place a much higher value on the things that we've fought so hard for!

I am still trying to come out on the other side, and when I get there, I am going to lock that door behind me and hope it never opens again. I don't even want to think about it,,lol,,too depressing.

Love ya girl!

Hugs!
