My name is Carole Stanley, I am a christian, and I am 56 years young in April of 2008. I live in Cortland, NY. I also have severe COPD and I am praying will qualify for a double lung transplant.

I started coming here today because for once and for all I do not want to fail quitting smoking. I seriously started quitting about 3 maybe 4 years ago maybe more then that. Forgive me but time and Carole don't get along. I for some reason just can't remember how long something has been unless I wrote it down somewhere. I have literally tried everything except the nasal spray that one was new to me. I started out just cutting back I was taking Zyban, and went from a pack sometimes a pack and a half down to 4 or 5 cigarettes a day and did that for a couple of years, successfully
. Then I was told I really needed to quit period. Well anyone who smokes knows that. They just choose to ignore it and dread physicals. This time I started Chantix. And for me it was a miracle drug.I love it! My husband however who just tried it had a very bad reaction from it. I have been on it now for about 2 years. I went off of it because I was tired of the nausea, and thought well I've been on it 2 years now, but realized I needed it so this is where I will announce to the world if I screw up again and hopefully that will make me stay tobacco free. What do you think?

You are absolutely going to be a huge SUCCESS! I quit using Chantix and I too LOVED it. It's the reason I'm going on almost a year as non-smoker. I LOVE being smoke free. Every day I feel blessed and healthier than the day before. I wish this for you! Be healthy. Stay in the moment. You can do this.

Hi Carole, You are certainly a fighter! More power to you. I am the same age as you. So much of quitting is the mental part. There is a web site called quitsmokingonline.com that really deals with the mental part. Its an online book and if you can't do the $20 donation, i did see in one spot where you can access it for free. You might want to study what the guy says. It has really helped me a lot. When we change our thinking, it makes the whole thing easier. You have a great day.

It sounds like you need to give it your best shot.

It is doable. Just don't let you talk yourself out of it again.

Thanks jonescarp for your comment. I really do need to. And I forgot to mention before that I also burnt my lungs back some 10 or 12 years ago which I'll explain in my next blog session.

CAROLE,
The CHANTIX does help but it was not ment to be taken that long, take it and get off nicotine, unfortunantly, even if you stay on CHANTIX and do not smoke, you will still have some craves that you will have to fight. So, you may as well stop taking CHANTIX and fight the craves, they will get easier, I know because I was on CHANTIX and I stopped taking it after one month and have been smoke free for 70 days today PEACE!

First of all I want to say that you write beautifully! The other thing is you have a much better chance of quitting this time because there is great power in people united for the same reason. You aren't going through this alone and you are going to be successful this time and you're helping so many people along the way. Also keep in mind that this is your quit. Do whatever it takes to make this work for you.

Hi Carole, My opinion... Try not to think of your quit, "As the world will be watching if you screw up again" But, that the world of this site , Become an Ex, is going to be the world of your support, your safety net while you do the work necessary to quit. You will find that this is an incredible system. I personally stopped using the words "I screwed up again" because, it is negative self talk. People relapse for different reasons. "I screwed up," to me implies that one is a "screw up" It is also true that each time one relapses and tries to quit again, they become a little more successful with each quit. I really believe this. I lost track of how many times I quit. This time is so very different for me and I owe it mainly to the wonderful people on this site. Good luck. I think you will find that and I say this to people often but, truly quitting smoking is surely not an easy task by any means, but, it is simple! If you think about it it is simply a simple choice and the not easy part of the equation is the hard work that needs to be done. It is never too late. So good luck. You'll do just fine.
