My Daughter in California

Hi, my daughter is in San Jose, California and they are just outside the evacuation zone. I am terrified for them!!

I just want them to come home.  I guess that's just being a MOM, so worried.  I also have been sick for 2 weeks.  Just a sore throat.  My own Dr. was booked up until September 30th.  I think it's time to switch Dr.'s.  I finally got up the courage today and drove across town to a Walk-in clinic, and the Dr. gave me some strong antibiotics.

Smoking was thought of today.  I have been self-isolating here at home.  I managed to get through the day without smoking.  So many others here have been through so much and didn't smoke, so why should I?  I didn't change my patch today, and the cravings have been bearable, so maybe it's time to get off of it.

If you are a praying person please pray for my daughter and family or send some positive thoughts.

Dale, how are things where you are?  I'm worried about you too!

I HOPE you don't have any cigarettes where you can get to them.  Keeping any around is giving yourself permission to fail.

Your daughter will do whatever she needs to do to be safe - you raised her to take care of herself - RIGHT?

Of COURSE you will worry, but smoking over it is just using it as an EXCUSE!

Remember - you don't DO that anymore!

Stay strong!  Stay committed!

Christine13 I see you're at about 21 days.  Let us know where you're at. Hoping things are well with your daughter.  JonesCarpeDiem‌ will probably check in as well. Mentioning him so he knows you were thinking about him.

YoungAtHeart‌ Yes, was wondering the same.

You have my prayers, Christine... strength and healing for you, and safety for your daughter.

My evacuation warning was lifted about half hour ago, so now I'm back to worrying about Covid.

Smoking won't help any of these worries for either of us, it will only give us one more thing to be concerned about!!  You know this already, just wanted to reinforce   .

I haven't smelled smoke but it's very hazy between the house here and the mountains. It is dry. We have an undeveloped 9 acre hillside behind us but they've cut the brush back 100 feet so I think we'll be okay unless there are strong winds carrying embers. There's our huge oak tree and a grove of Eucalyptus in the canyon across the street out front that would surely be a big deal if they caught fire.

Hi Christine

Your family are in my thoughts and prayers , you as well . Sorry you are sick on top of it all . Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon .

Good job not smoking . I highly recommend following the instructions for taking the patch ok . It's like any other prescription med ... or antibiotics for that matter ... you have to take those til completed or the infection comes back right. No harm done following the rules with your patch . Have you taken the patch before or this is your first time ?

Please stay connected here or other support groups, it will help with the anxiety and the worry and with keeping your quit strong. You can get through this .  Sending you gentle hugs and peace .

Hi Christine,

Hang in there.  I am also in San Jose.  I  would suggest you not worry too much at this point as the fires are a ways off and the prevailing winds should continue to blow them away from the city.  Things are pretty bad with the air quality, however.  We are often times at the officially unhealthy levels....walk outside at times and you almost feel like you're smoking again.    Feel free to drop me a line anytime if you want any updates on the fires.

Hi Christine.  I will pray for your daughter.  Great job not smoking. Take the patches as they are prescribed.  Probably not a good idea to stop too soon.  You are doing so well.  Try to stop worrying

Sometimes thinking about my kids and what they are going through makes me want to light up too. Being a mom is my main reason for quitting. She will be ok and so will you!

About the Author
I'm a widow now, my husband passed away January 1, 2018 He died of COPD, and pre leukemia and the flu. He quit smoking 15 years ago which gave him extra time. I am a mother, and grandmother. I have smoked for 47 years. I am going to have my forever quit and I'm doing it for me and my two daughters so I can live longer and be with them. I like to read, swim, garden, crochet, paint and doodle. I also enjoy walking and visiting with friends and family. I am 100% making this my last quit. I have been in denial about what smoking has done to me and my kids. I must make a new life for myself and it doesn't include cigarettes. I may already have COPD, but have not been officially diagnosed.
