Mom in the hospital

I took my mom to the ER, she has a very bad cold and was having a hard time breathing.  She was diagnosed with emphysema. I am very upset. I am glad that I learned so much the last month about quitting. I got a head start, now I have to get her to NOPE!  She'll be in the hospital for a few days, hopefully the withdrawal symptoms won't be so bad when it's time to bring her home. She is a smoker, she hasn't smoked around me for the last month, I told her she could if she wanted to, but she said, "no way, I'm too proud of you".  So she will definitely be my quit smoking partner. NOPE! NOPE!

Good for you on protecting your quit.  I will keep you and your Mom in my prayers. I am sorry about her emphysema.

Please have the reading all ready for her, and the crave buster supplies, and your list of all the wonderful things about quitting.  Perhaps they will put a patch on her in the hospital. They did that for my Mom - you might ask.   My daughter made cards for me, and had the kitchen decorated with balloons and streamers for my quit day.  Part of my success I attribute to not wanting to disappoint HER!

Be patient with her when she comes home.  This is not going to be easy for her since she didn't really have preparation time.

Best wishes to you both.

If she has to spend a few days in the hospital for breathing problems, then just maybe this will open her eyes to quitting.  Good luck to her.  And congratulations on protecting your quit during this stressful time.

God bless your mom and how sweet she is. You should be proud of you too! Thoughts and prayers to you and your mom.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I know exactly how you feel. My mom was hospitalized because of not being able to get rid of bronkitus... and was diagnosed with emphysema.  I agree with Nancy about having all of the reading material ready for her.

Great job protecting your quit through this. Let her be one of your reasons, now. You have to set a good example for her.  I'll be praying for both of you.

Hopefully the hospital will educate her too, i know our local hospital gives information about quitting and uses the patch on people who are smokers that are admitted. will have you both in my prayers, with this diagnosis may motivate her quite a bit to quit.and seeing you with your quit may see that this is possible for her too.

Thanks everybody! The nurse said she has COPD, earlier the doctor said Emphysema. They did put a patch on her, I was glad it was the lowest dose 7mg. I'm convinced cold turkey is the way now. It is just so sad to think what lies ahead for her. I left her a letter when I was leaving the hospital, asking her to be my quit partner. Everyone is talking about how she has to quit, I didn't want to make her feel worse than she already feels. The hospital gave her all kinds of how to quit information to read. I told her I hope she knows that she cannot smoke ever. NOPE (she knows what that means from me all last month). We are very close, I spend a lot of time with her. She knows she's in trouble when she gets home without me having to say too much tonight.

I truly believe things happen for a reason, of course, I don't know what made me slip the other day, but I'm glad I decided to quit ASAP on my own and not forced to not smoke in front of my mom or convince her to quit while I smoke. That might be harder than quitting.

Here is one of my favorite verses from the Bible, I've been thinking about it all day. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, Lean not on your own understandings, Acknowledge him in all your ways, and He with light your path.   Good Night!
