The great thing about music is that it never dies. We don't have Duane Allman, but we have Live at the Fillmore. We don't have Jimi Hendrix, but we have Electric Ladyland. We don't have Michael Jackson, but we'll always have Thriller.

Some of these guys are like comets, shooting across the night sky. They were, perhaps, destined only for a big bright flash. Jackson, from all reports, was like Elvis -- so broken that he was never going to see old age.

I love that David very well said and like hwc sometimes I think we have people who come to us so gifted that they are too much for this world so they don't stay for very long....

Cindy:

The common thread is the addiciton to heroin and/or similar opiate pain killers. Some, like Clapton, get lucky and manage to get clean after years of struggle. But it burns most of them from Gram Parsons to Jimi Hendrix to Elvis to Jackson. If they don't die right away, they become shells of their former selves. Jackson's music had already died. He hasn't performed in over a decade and nobody thought he could get through these London shows scheduled to start next month.

Hi, David, I just read this to my husband, and I started to get weepy at the end. It's beautiful.

I think he was an amazing preformer but became very strange, He became out of touch with reality . My friend, the lawyer, thinks the Dr may have given him an overdose, an assisted suicide. In an attempt to cover up his involvement took an hour to call 911, a big gap here. Now, what do you think about the Governor who went to Argentina with his girlfriend. Are you shitting me, ECCE HOMO

Nice David, truly. I would not have wanted his childhood or his fame. I would have loved to experience even one pinky of his talent...I'd settle for being able do just one half-way decent moon walk! Amazing. His musical talent and showmanship was beyond superstar quality, which will make him a Legend....rightfully so.

Thanks for the comments - music is one of the greatest gifts given to mankind - it doesn't matter what genre it moves and lifts you - and can be a great help in our quits to as a way of relieving craves! I was saddened by the news of Michael hence the poem even if his music has not been a huge fav of mine it was certainly part of my growing up - who hasn't danced to one of his songs - RIP

Thank you David and well said Hwc. Lest us not forget Harry Nillsson, Long John Baldry, Kurt Cobain, Stevie Ray Vahn and the members of Lynard Skynard. I agree with Hwc about the addiction thing. That's why I was thrilled to see the concert of Clapton and Winwood on TV. It's great that some of them are still alive and can still rock.

Beautiful, David!

I just stopped by to see how you are doing. 'Hope all is going well.

Are the panic attacks and depression better now? Because at the 1 month mark I started having little panic attacks. 'Must have something to do with thwarted nicotinic receptors...or something. Not fun. Exercise - pretty much any type - seems to help the most. I guess.

I just stumbled upon this and, David, that was very beautiful and well put. Kind of sums up my feelings about it. He was such a huge part of my music when I was growing up.
