Joe Di Maggio Smokes Camels

Well, I think the title says it all, but the advertisments deserves a look... I think it's hilarious that they have said that Camels contain 28% less nicotine, but yet burn 25% slower, therefore give you the equivalent of 5 extra cigarettes... I mean... HELLO? WHAT? So you're touting a benefit and then taking it away again?

Check it out here

It was just too large a picture to post.

Obviously it's an ad from... phew... I don't know... the 60's? (Guessing by the art style - could be very early 70's)

Oh, also - I listen to a podcast called GeekNights - most people find it intensely annoying but I LOVE it. They were talking about how at modern rock concerts, people hold up electronic devices instead of lighters because smoking is no longer cool! How awesome is that?!

Updates on my life: haven't been to work for 2 days - been blowing chunks, aka throwing up. It stopped yesterday afternoon but now my throat and neck are killing me and I couldn't wake up this morning... now I'm worried that my bosses think I'm just slacking off. True - I'm still depressed about life events and the car and all that, but I feel like I'm taking it a bit far now... in fact, if I could get hold of my friend to come and fetch me, I would! In any case, I'm off to the doctor this afternoon so that I can have a chat with them and sort this out ASAP. No more sick days for me... I have work to do!

Aside from that, I've done an enourmous amount of drawing over the past few days - especially while confined to bed! Can't wait to get to a scanner to scan and post them... I feel I have really improved, and it just keeps getting better and better with every drawing.

I'm glad to see so many people having good quits... I've also noticed a good number of deleted pages, and quite honestly - if you're not going to do it properly, and you can't do it with the amazing support and advice available here, come back when you're *really* ready to quit. And for those of you who are in the early stages of a quit - again, hang in there - saying no to one cigarette is the equivalent of saying no to a whole pack in the long run... plus get a counter... I'm actually seeing the money that I've saved in my bank account! 🙂

The caption at the website says the Camel ad ran in newspapers in 1942. I think the whole world smoked back then! I like old black & white movies from that era but now find myself noticing how often the stars are lighting up rather than paying attention to the plot. Also you have to know that cigarettes were rationed during WWII, so the manufacturers were probably marketing on the idea that you get more smokes for your money rather than any health or scientific benefits. This was about a generation before the Surgeon General's report on smoking. Hope you feel better soon...

Love that people are holding up electronic devices instead of lighters! I think I've known for a LONG time that smoking was no longer "cool" - I just tried not to think about it 'cause I wasn't ready to quit.

I am so happy to be free of cigarettes today. Thanks for the post.
