Deep breathing, lots of water, put on some calming music, or go for a walk, get some excercise. These are all good stress busters. You must make an effort to keep yourself calm, and think. Use your mind and think logically, do not give in to hasty or irrational thoughts. Stress is only made worse by smoking, that is the most important thing to realize.

Jean, please read the last comment from Linda on your blog yesterday.

She wrapped it up pretty darn good.

And PLEASE, Always come and post HELP when you are having a tough time.

Do it BEFORE you go to the store or reach for a cig so we can support you and talk you down.

It won't always be tough. The first 2-3 weeks are the most awkward uncomfortable time of a quit

Hi Jean,  So proud of you for  doing this. I quit on March 7th of this year and I believe you just have to take one day at a time and don't let yourself stop and buy any. What seems to help me the most is coming to this site every time I want to smoke and reading all these wonderful peoples blogs .Just take there advice and stay strong!!!! Absolutely, come here, read what has been written and post your own comments.  This site will save your life if you let it.  I will NOT tell you that it is always easy but it IS worth the struggles.  Don't buy any cigarettes, don't let any around you, do whatever you need to do to distract yourself, take a shower, brush your teeth, smell your clean hair...smoke free clean hair!  Dry your bedding outside and then when you get into bed, breathe deeply.  You can do so much good by quitting and you can allow so much damage to yourself by smoking.  In the beginning, I could not look at a pack of cigarettes, a coupon, or a lighter without terrible cravings.  I gave everything away.  Now, it doesn't bother me to see a pack of cigarettes or a lighter or a coupon or someone smoking, except that I feel sorry for them.  I know what addiction is and it is not something I ever want to experience again. Welcome, Jean, stay with us, post when you need help.

About the Author
Hello, My name is Dale. I was quit 18 months before joining this site and had participated on another site during that time. I learned a lot there and brought it with me. I joined this site the first week of August 2008. I didn't pressure myself to quit. HOW I QUIT I didn't count, I didn't deny myself to get started. When I considered quitting (at a friends request to influence his brother to quit), I simply told myself to wait a little longer. No denial, nothing painful. After 4 weeks I was down to 5 cigarettes from a pack a day. The strength came from proving to myself, I didn't need to smoke because I normally would have smoked. Simple yes? I bought the patch. I forgot to put one on on the 4th day. I needed it the next day but the following week I forgot two days in a row I put one in my wallet with a promise to myself that I would slap it on and wait an hour rather than smoke. It rode in my wallet my first year. There's nothing keeping any of you from doing this. It doesn't cost a dime. This is about unlearning something you've done for a long time. The nicotine isn't the hard part. Disconnecting from the psychological pull, the memories and connected emotions is. :-) Time is the healer.
