It has been nine months since I've blogged....

And, it has been hell.  About ten months ago, I learned that I have a heart defect.  The following day after I had an EEG of my brain, we discovered I am an epileptic.  I had been having seizures for awhile, but none of my doctors picked up on it.  Two days later, after an MRI of my back, and not being able to walk without horrible pain for weeks, my lumbar surgery was booked.  It was a difficult surgery with rods on either side of my spine and fusions on some of my discs.

Seven months after my back surgery and two more long episodes of pain, I was once again taken to the operating room.  This was the most gut-wrenching episode of my life.  They removed the rods only to put in longer ones and fused the entire right side of my back.  The pain from the surgery for the past five weeks cannot even be labelled with an adjective.  My surgeons have told be that my recovery will be close to two years.

I do not do anything because I am only allowed to get in the car with my husband to go to my surgeon's office for my post-op visits.  Depression is now my middle name.  I had quit smoking in preparation for the surgery for awhile.  My addiction took me back, or I should say that I allowed it to take me back.  The fight has been going on for weeks.  Yes, I understand that smoking can slow down my recovery from my surgery.  How I pray every single day that I can just put down the butts.  No matter what, I will keep praying to find the strength and determination within.

I am so happy for those of you that have celebrated milestones, and also those who have made the decision to quit and join BecomeAnEX.org.  Best wishes and much love to all.       Deb

My goodness! I'm so sorry to hear that, Deb! I can't begin to imagine the pain you go through every day! I will be here for you and my thoughts and prayers for your recovery both physical and from smoking. Once you're quit, the quit will help reliee some of your pain. It's getting there that's a huge challenge! Please return to your readings since you may know the ideas but reinforcing them will help your mindset. We're right here!

God Bless!

Fighting to stay quit is futile because you just can't keep it up forever.

Willingness to quit and then acceptance is the easier path.

Do go back and reread the reading given you. We are here for you but you need to change how you think about cigarettes. Be patient with yourself.

It's hard to be strong and determined when you're in that much pain.  Smoking obviously doesn't relieve it.  But as you said quitting will help your body heal faster.  I pray that you may find relief sooner than later and that you will find your quit again.

I am glad to see you and so sorry you re dealing with all those issues.  I understand more than most, since I had two major surgeries in two months in the spring.  The pain seemed never ending!  But - it DID end and I pray yours will, too.

My goodness, Deb, it's so good to see you here on EX again!  I had wondered and wondered about how you were doing.  I'm so sorry to hear about all your physical troubles and surgeries.  You have tried to quit many times since I've known you here.  I think that Dale hit the nail on the head; you've been FIGHTING with yourself about quitting for a long, long time. When you allow yourself to become WILLING to quit, things may seem a lot easier.  I know you have a lot on your plate, but Giulia is absolutely right (and you yourself said this in your blog!) when she said that quitting will help your body heal more quickly.  People continue to smoke because they sincerely believe that they are deriving some benefit from it.  What is the benefit you think you are getting from smoking, Deb?  If you can hone in on that answer, it may be easier for you to accept that living a smoke-free life will actually IMPROVE your life.  I love ya, Deb!  Please stay in touch with me!
