It didn't solve everything

For years, the medical profession has told us that smoking causes almost every kind of health problem known to humankind. It is common knowledge that it causes lung cancer, COPD and heart disease and hypertension. My doctor also told me it can contribute to high cholesterol. That surprised me a bit. And I have even heard that smoking contributes to hair loss because of impaired circulation.

All those reasons are really good reasons to quit smoking. We all have other reasons as well that are not health related.

Here’s the problem. It’s kind of a reality-check. I have been telling myself for so long that smoking is causing my high blood pressure, high cholesterol, accelerated heart rate and maybe even hair loss. Now that I am an ex-smoker, I guess I subconsciously expected that all my health problems would vanish within weeks of my last cigarette.

I know that some damage has been done and not all of it is reversible. I know that smoking did not necessarily cause every health problem I have ever had. I know these things, but I can’t help being a little disappointed that I didn’t become 20 years younger, perfectly healthy and grow a full head of hair in the last 54 days.

It is too funny you should mention thinking every health issue would automatically get better. I have been smoke free for 46 days, and I am just getting over the worst case of the flu/bronchitis I have had in 14 years. I thought for sure since I quit smoking I should be over this by now. All i can say is thank goodness I did quit. imagine how bad this would have been if I were still smoking, who knows, might have ended up with pneumonia or in the hospital.. I am not sure how long it is supposed to take for the effects of smoking to go away from your blood pressure. I do know that it should have an impact on your readings. Good luck and keep up the great job with your quit!!!!

I really think mine is coincidence, but I am feeling worse than I have ever felt. except for (and this alone makes it worth while) the Cough is gone, no more waking up hacking my lungs up every morning.

Well all I can say is after I quit smoking my blood pressure went way down! My dr. is now monitoring it where I might possibly be able to go off medication! yes it has gotten that low! Yeah!!!! Now tomorrow I go for lab work to get my cholesterol checked. I have gained 4 lbs since I quit smoking. I told my doctor I knew he would yell at me for something. But he said I'm not going to yell at you about your weight unless your lab tests come back and your cholestrol or suger is high. They are both fine now. I'm hoping since I quit smoking they are even lower. We'll see! Well for now all I can tell you is by me quitting smoking everything has been a plus! Maybe you don't see it now but you will eventually!
