Is it safe to use multiple quit aids and still smoke as I am cutting back to quit?

I did not realize that it is safe to use more than one quit aid at a time until I watched the quit aid video on this site.  I had already ask for the patches to be sent to me and they are in the mail on the way to me, but now I am wondering if I should consider using the patches for the daily nicotine release and use the lozenges along with the patches when having cravings to help detour the cravings when they happen??? What are yalls thoughts on this??? and is it safe to use multiple quit aids and still smoke as I am cutting back to quit??? Would love to hear yalls feedback

The average cigarette contains 12 mgs of nicotine, although depending on your brand they range from 8-24mgs.  Make sure that you are not taking in more nicotine with any combination of NRTs than you were with smoking.  I did that on 2 quits and ended up being more addicted to nicotine than ever.  Both were miserable, long-term failures.

I don't believe any of the NRTs are to be taken in addition to smoking cigarettes.  And yes, I tried that as well.  Again, I think you are setting yourself up for failure if you do that.  The only stop smoking aid I am aware of that allows smoking (temporarily) while taking is Chantix.

All that being said, there are many who have successfully quit using the patch, and occasionally using a piece of nicotine gum or lozenge.

Tom has said it all!  Also, WELCOME!

Too much nicotine can also give you the shakes or nausea, so monitor yourself closely.

As Tom said the only one you can use while smoking is Chantix, which doesn't give you nicotine but blocks thoses recepetors.  All the others contain nicotine and should not be used while smoking.  The key is not to take in more nicotine than you already do. Read read read, education and knowledge about this addiction is a key to success, as well as blogging, reading blogs and reaching out when you need to.  Welcome to the community.

I quit cold turkey...but I am told it is not good to smoke with NRT’s...actually Tom gave you good answer...We are not Doctors ... and I would think it would be best to consult with he/she to let you know if it is safe... ~ Colleen 184 DOF

This is incorrect.  In addiction to Chantix, you also continue smoking when taking Welbutrin.  Please research and consult physician for any decisions made.  These are opinions!

Welcome to EX.  When I have questions about drugs...I ask my pharmacist and then my doctor, the pharmacist is really enthusiastic about helping, at least MINE is.  I didn't use anything but I have no issue with using nicotine replacement...I would not smoke though.

You can also smoke while taking Wellbutrin, which doesn't contain nicotine.  Cigarettes just start not "tasting good" and your desire to smoke lessens.  At least that has been my experience.  You still need a plan in place to deal with triggers, emotions, etc.

Cold turkey worked for me, too .I'm an "all or nothing" kinda gal and I tried patches and gum (not at the same time) before my last quit and would rip off a patch and smoke--not a smart decision.  This time I wanted the nicotine out of my body as soon as possible so I could move on to dealing with my emotional dependency on cigs (which was HUGE).  Glad you're here, I couldn't have done it without EX...Just realized I have a year and five months today...I stopped counting the days at one year; you can get there, too!

About the Author
I will be 50 this year and have smoked pretty much since teenage years with the exception of quitting successfully a few times for several years throughout the years, but even then I seem to start back at some point and fall right back into smoking again.
