Insidious big tobacco aka why does smoking look cool?

It’s day 23 of my quit. I’m ok. Still having cravings, mostly when I’m bored or restless. Or I see something completely unbelievable like this on TV.

So, my fiancé and I are watching a documentary about flying saucers on the discovery channel. Mike Wallace was interviewing someone or other. This was 1954ish. So Mike Wallace says, “I’m Mike Wallace, and the cigarette is (name of brand).”

He shows the burning cigarette he has in his hand! Seriously?! And yes, it made me want one. It also reminded me how completely evil the cigarette companies are! I know everyone smoked then.
It reminded me that my Dad told me years ago that all the film noirs where the femme fatales look so cool lighting a cigarette. Or the hard boiled detective smoking. And pretty much every movie especially from 30’s -50’s It was just product placement.
Let me repeat that. IT WAS JUST PRODUCT PLACEMENT!! That means the images that we thought were so cool, that we aspired to look like, the rebellious feeling was just a ploy. And in the 90’s- today the directors of the same type of movies just have their characters smoking. To set a tone. To look cool. Do they know it was a ploy? I doubt it. The damage has been done.
It makes me hate them even more.
especially since I want a cigarette.

To be honest I can’t blame anyone for my smoking, but me...I liked it...that’s just me...I am the oddball...when I finally quit, I did it because I was tired of smoking and didn’t like it anymore...I knew what the tobacco companies did and I still choose to smoke...that was then, this is now...now I am living life without the smoke...wishing you a Happy and peaceful Saturday ~ Colleen 782 DOF

I agree with Colleen sweetplt

I made the choice to smoke I can't blame anyone for the choices I made in life.  I'm just glad I made the best choice by quitting smoking

Enjoy your Saturday

C'mon, "back in the day" we didn't know that cigarettes were addictive, nor did we know the harm they caused.  Big Tobacco KNEW and continued to increase the addictive substances in their products and to hawk them in every possible way.

While we chose to smoke, it was probably a foregone conclusion that we would try it - and as soon as we did - BINGO - they had us!

Our choice was uninformed - Big Tobacco's choices were not.  Remember Joe Camel?

I found this awhile back - after the truth was exposed by the lawsuits:

Startling, isn't it?

The did pay actors to smoke and still do pay for product placement in movies.  And many actors in the old days owed their souls to the movie studios and didn't have a choices under their contracts.   This still amazes me that Freuds cousin, who was a PR person, used Freuds theories to get women addicted in the 20's.  I'm more on the fence about it being totally a choice.  When I began smoking, the addictiveness and health warnings were non-existent.  By the time they tobacco companies were exposed, I was already addicted.

Congrats on 23 days.  Of course your having cravings.  As you pointed out, companies intentionally got us addicted.  Hang in there.  You're doing great.

I feel like I should delete this. I feel really misunderstood. It’s not that watching movies made me smoke. I’m just saying that those images that made it look cool in the first place were for money rather than atmosphere. The interview just really made me angry. Sorry for the confusion. I’m sorry I said anything.

I didn't sense anyone thought that.   I thought you were commenting on tobacco companies.  So, please don't be sorry you said anything.   You're thoughts are just as valuable as anyone else's.

Your blog is a good one, it is eye opening to realize how much we were exposed to smoking and thinking it was glamourous....WOW. YoungAtHeart‌ That Joe Chemo is horrifying, never saw that before. I could not watch shows like Madmen when I first quit because it really triggered me.  Now, I rarely even notice it.

23 days is a young quit, you are doing great.

Thank you very much. That Mike Wallace interview with the cigarette triggered me so much and reminded me of all this stuff.
