I want a glass of wine!

I love being outside in nice weather and for years part of the fun in that was porch or deck drinking.  ( and smoking).   I haven't had a drink because I am scared I'll make a dumb decision and smoke. I don't have any cigarettes in the house, but I have 2 neighbors who would be happy to provide if I said I needed one. (Eek.) I really want a glass of wine right now.  The workday is over. My head is killing me. Wine sounds ah-mazing.   I don't think 1 glass would make me want to smoke, but maybe it would, so I won't do it. I will take my dog on a walk instead. Make some iced tea. Listen to music. Read. Enjoy the weather on the deck without wine.

By jove, I think you've GOT it!  Right thought pattern - perfect decision!!!

You are correct that a lot of quits have been lost under the spell of a bit of alcohol reducing your ability to stay committed.

PROUD of you for understanding that.

There will come a time when maybe 1/2 glass of wine will be OK - but it's not today!

Did I mention I am PROUD of you???!!!

Wise move!  The porch, the deck, the drink, the neighbors - they'll all be there when the time is right and you have a little bit more time under your belt.  You edging up to one month smoke-free and that is pretty cool.  Drinking is the quickest way I know to blow a quit.  So when you feel secure enough to have that drink, start with just one.  In the meantime I think you are REALLY doing this right.  You are protecting your three-week-old baby.  Kudos!

This is so wise because alcohol has been the downfall of many quits! You'll enjoy wine again......just as much without a cigarette. But for now....new in your quit.....enjoy your tea and your deck.

Stay Strong.

You’re doing great!  I’ve been going on walks as well.  I have a favorite spot on a walking path where I just sit and reflect.  It’s hard not doing those things we used to love mine was to sit outside on the deck. I haven’t sat out there in almost a month out of fear.  Keep doing what you’re doing

Find a different deck.  And what I mean by that is - find a different place - anywhere - where you can have a similar experience.  Take chair, put it somewhere.  Anywhere.  Find a new "favorite spot."  Create it.  It's NOT going to be the same.  Can't be.  Because you have history in that other spot.  But if you go to that new spot enough times, history will be made.  Don't know if that makes any sense, but... I offer it up as an idea.

I lost two quits because of my choice to drink alcohol.  This is my third and last quit and I had to avoid my deck, neighbors and drinking for a couple of months...once I was stronger in my quit, I could have a glass of wine, but I couldn’t have more...I had to avoid my girlfriend who smoked and she so understood...and oh my the deck had to many memories...but here I am 547 DOF and I can sit on the deck and see my girlfriend and neighbors and I can have the occasional drink, etc., it took time, but it gets better....you are being smart...Happy Tuesday ~ Colleen 547 DOF

I didn't sit on my deck for a few months when I first quit.  elvan‌ suggested blowing bubbles.  It actually works!

About the Author
Hi! I started smoking when I was in Italy in 2003. Everyone was doing it, and it made me feel so cool. I've quit numerous times but never for long. This time is it. I want it to be. I am so over it. I want to respect my body, I want a strong immune system, I don't want to waste time smoking, I don't like the extra stress smoking makes me feel, I don't want to smell, and I'm tired of hiding that dirty habit from so many people. I'm 3 weeks without a cigarette today (5/27/20), and I'm so proud of myself. I wanted a resource I can rely on when I have tough days and temptations, and for sources to continuously educate myself on the health benefits of quitting for reassurance.
