At 8:30a.m  Eastern time, it will have been 48 hours since I stumped out my last one. I am paying close attention to the morning cough .... and somehow not having that first morning cigarrette is easier this morning... I dont want my lungs to feel like this anymore. Loving the support Im getting here.... and knowing in my heart that I CAN do this!

Good for you! I still have an intermittent cough. That is why I'm awake so early this morning. I actually was awakened by the cough. It will eventually disappear. You are doing this!!!! Way to go! Have a beautiful smoke-free day ;--)

I went back into my old blogs and dug this up for you...  Let the copy-paste commence!

OK.. Here I go all medical geek....

There are tiny hairs called cilia in your respiratory system that wave and ripple and push particles like a conveyor belt up the respiratory tract and out until you swallow them and they are digested in the stomach. This includes bacteria, viruses phlegm, smoke, tar, soot, dust, whatever. They work as the body's air filter.

Nicotine first paralyzes the cilia, and over time kills them. All that foreign material can sit in your lungs, taking up space, making your breathing capacity smaller, but not really bothering you directly other than making you more susceptible to disease and shortness of breath.

When you stop smoking for a couple of days the cilia you still have begin to awaken and do their job. That is the two or three days after quitting flu that you may hear about. Hacking and wheezing as the little hairs cause a traffic jam of never-before moved gook on it's way out.

You may think that is over, but as the gook is removed and the lungs become healthier, they will begin to regrow cilia at an exponential rate. Those cilia work together becoming a stronger and stronger force clearing out the little corners of the lungs. You can feel more and more clogged up, wheezy, and congested, just because your body is getting better and better at collecting and excavating.

Don't fear tho. You may have smoked for years and years, but your body will regrow the cilia and empty out all the cobwebs in a few weeks or months (Maybe a year or a bit more on the outside) and your respiratory systems biggest defense system against airborne illnesses will be in full effect.

Yes, DocMarkC --- sometimes we can all use a little perspective.  I've heard (and experienced a bit so far) that you can be prone to some hearty coughing spells getting rid of the 'gunk' as things try to heal.  I'm just starting my 4th week (day 23 here -- yea me!), but I'll tell you those first couple of weeks I'd go into some coughing spells like no ones business.  If I were being honest, though, not that much worse than ones I was having when I was smoking.  Before the end of the first week, I felt SOOOO good to take a huge, deep breath that didn't end in a cough.  I seem to be having some allergy issues (which I think are totally unrelated) now, but I'm here to tell ya --- my lungs and breathing feel SOO much better in this short period of time it's amazing.

Garden --- HANG IN THERE!!!  And yes, sometimes you just have to go for the diversion.  Today is my 3rd day without Chantix so I'm trying it solo now.  So far, so good.  I hate the metobolic thing, but I'll deal with that too.   OT, my sister is one of those people who gives me this inspirational magnets for my fridge (I'd say that it could be wierd, but she's usually right, and I usually leave them up there --- guess that's why she's my sister!).

From Alice in Wonderland:

"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things."  "I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen.  "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day.  Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible thinge before breakfast." --- Lewis Carroll

From Eleanor Roosevelt:

Do one thing every day that scares you . . .

I won't bore you with the rest of her magnets, as they aren't always inspirational,  but usually entertaining  :).    Hang in there -- Tomorrow will be day 3 right?  You'll be over the biggest hurdle of the physical nic addiction.  Most of the rest is the habit retraining.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!
