I must be crazy

With all the stuff I have going on, I felt it was the right time to also quit smoking. I must be crazy! So I opened the sample pack of patches my dr gave me this morning, what was to be my day one, only to find out they had expired months ago.  Great! So I dig thru the paperwork the dr gave me for the scripts she wrote and dropped those off this morning. Well, they don't have what I need in stock and won't have it until tomorrow evening.  GREAT! So my day is just getting better.

So I've been cold turkey today, by no real choice of my own.  The headache is killing me, I can't focus on anything at work and just hoping I can make it thru for the next 3 hours without blowing up at my co-workers.

So how's your day going?

Hi there.  Welcome.  For some reason your blog didn't come through.  First thing after your click on Write a Blog Post is to give your blog a title in the top rectangular box, then write in the larger Comment box area the body of your post.  When finished click the red Publish button on the left.  And it's always wise to copy what you write just in case a glitch happens.  If you need further assistance, click on my G find my message board  and leave a shout.  I'll do what I can to help.

Oh thank you!

New to this online site stuff. I just don't know why it's so hard to get my stuff together and just do this.

I know all the reasons to quit, the health benefits etc., I just can't seem to get up the willpower this time around.

So any tips and tricks etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Ex

You have come to the right place if you are making the decision to commit to quit smoking.  At EX our resolve is to never smoke again.  NOPE “Not one puff ever.”  I suggest that you follow the steps on the web site pages along with reading, writing, studying, researching and blogging if you like.

This is all about you and what you are willing to do not willpower to be a nonsmoker.  If you haven’t read it or have not been informed here is a link to Allen Carr’s book, “Easy Way to Quit Smoking”.  It is an easy read suggested by the “elders” (those with 1+ yrs. quit).

Also check out www.whyquit.com.  There is a lot of additional beneficial information to read and study.  Look for Freedom From Nicotine My Journey Home and Nicotine Addiction 101.

Both were extremely helpful for me.  Stay close to the site and learn, ask questions. Education is the key to success even in quitting smoking. Read the blogs and most of all enjoy your commitment to quit smoking.

If you should need something to do here are two links that will help

Think more of wilingness rather than willpower.  Just be willing to do whatever it takes.  Think of quitting as a skill.  Like any skill, it takes study, hard work, perseverance and a certain amount of self-sacrifice.  But most of all it takes Commitment.  Stick around and read.  You'll find what's necessary to spur you on to success.  Cravings lessen when commitment blooms.

Thank you thank you thank you! I've been feeling like I'm up against a wall today. Just not myself, second guessing doing this.

I've downloaded the book and will look thru it tonight.

I had every intention of starting off on the right foot this morning, thought I had all my ducks in a row, had my stack of gum and hard candies etc. Then when I opened the package of temp patches my dr gave me to get me started, they were out of date by 6 months. The script I was given I turned in this morning to the pharamcy and then I get called that there's an issue with it and the insurace is kicking it back.

And I'm sitting here, trying not to have a total breakdown. The withdrawal headache is nasty, I can't think straight.  All I want to do is crawl back to bed and start the day over.

I know this won't last, I know the first few days/weeks are the hardest, I've done this before. Just not feeling strong at the moment, feel like tossing in the towel right now and giving up.  I feel like such a failure today!

Your words of encouragement, have helped! Thank you all so much!

Welcome to our community!

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I also highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.”

As well, read the sections on this site, and read the blogs, responses and pages of folks you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com and quitsmokingonline.com for the good information contained there.

After you have completed the recommended reading, it will be time to make an informed choice of the quit aid, if any, you will use. If you go that route, I personally recommend the aids that don't let the addict control the dose such as the available prescription drugs or the patch. But – any method that you think will work well for you will be best for you.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand. If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around your head alone.  Get busy!

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!
