I'm back 10 years later...

Hi all,

June 22nd 2011 I smoked my last cigarette. 10 years and a lot has obviously changed in that time. I was just a young mom raising 3 kids, in a bad marriage and nothing to my name. 2011 was the year that forever changed the course of my life. Quiting smoking literally ended my marriage. When we stopped smoking together outside we stopped communicating. Instead I found confidence and realized how strong I was. I became a runner and went back to school. I grew so much!

Yesterday I came back here to read my blog because this place will always mean a lot to me. I need some courage right now.  Sadly 2012 was the last year I didn't struggle with dependence on a drug to deal with my emotions. Reading my blog yesterday made me sad. But happy at the same time. I'm now working on day 2 of a new journey... The stress of being a single mom, moving, going to school and my dad dying was too much. I started numbing myself with alcohol. In my blog I had talked about dealing with raw feelings and I stopped doing that. I stopped dealing with stress. My blog helped me remember how positive I once was and that if I can stop smoking I can certainly stop drinking. I may continue to post here or I may not. I'm not so sure. But I do know my journey is not done yet!

Oh and one more thing! I never went to school for Radiology. Instead I became a Registered Respiratory Therapist and work regularly with COPD patients. Funny how life works out like that. I definitely recognized a few names here so please say hi if you remember me and if you are new stick around and change your life!!! Because it is so possible!

@triomommy27 - I remember you bc I quit just ahead of you on May 29th 10 years ago. So very sorry to hear about your Father and stress issues. For those reasons, I'd say to stay close and let us help to guide you with the drinking, etc. Congrats at nearly 1O years smoke FREE!  #Tenyearclub #2011quitters  🙂

Congratulations on 10 years of being smokefree.

My name was changed to protect the innocent but it's good to see you back here.

Hey!  You quit smoking - you can do ANYTHING to which you set your mind!

Good to see you.  I will be nine years quit this July, so you might have still been around if you hung out awhile.

I think some of the same tools that you found useful to quit smoking might also apply to alcohol.  Change up your routines; change your mind's direction , stay busy  -  all things that are helpful in battling addiction.

Hang around if you think we can be helpful.  I know others here have fought the alcohol battle, and they might chime in with tips.

A super congrats on your precious quit journey YAY for 10 precious Smokefree years and counting YAY for each and every YEAR WON with many more to come. 🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉 @triomommy27 I was a functioning alcoholic or at the time I was I worked but drank 7 nights a week for over 20 years whew my health was taking a beating so finally I figured enough was enough it was EXtremely difficult plus my husband still drank he makes his own beer but I didn't care much for beer, I drank pretty much a pint of rum a night sometimes just half a pint! I ended up having a heart attack thank God it was mild plus my stomach lining was and is pretty thin ugh but thankfully I celebrated 10 years of Sobriety in February and finally my husband has been sober for 5 months YAY! He quit smoking 7 years ago in April YAY and I'll be celebrating 7 years of Smokefree living in July, you can do this quit too believe in yourself because we believe in you and we're rooting you on....

Life happens doesn't it?  Congrats on 10 years not smoking.  I have never had a problem with alcohol.  Both of my parents were alcoholics and both of my sons are too.  My oldest son quit drinking one year after I quit smoking ( I don't think that was a coincidence.)  He is doing great.  He is growing still.  He is a delightful man.  I use to take the patients from the psychiatric hospital where I worked to AA meetings.  Those meetings are pretty wonderful. Wishing you all the best.

Hi there - I certainly remember you! Congrats on almost 10 years! As Nancy said, you quit smoking - you can do anything!
I actually quit drinking before I quit smoking. I am 40 years sober. I think the strategies for getting out of addiction can be very similar. “One day at a time”, positive self talk, “not one ever”, believing that you ”can do it” - all of that works for alcohol addiction too. I think Allen Carr may have even had a book on quitting alcohol.
You can do it! Great to see you and congrats again! I celebrate 11 years in about a week - so I know how great it feels! You should be very proud.

@Strudel hiiiiii I definitely remember talking with you a lot. So happy to come back and see all the wonderful people still here. Allen Carr did write a book on drinking and it also lead me to Tbis Naked Mind. She used the same ideas as he did. My mind is in a great place and when I look back at smoking. It was much harder to quit smoking. I drink several nights a week but in the last year I have cut way down and I have given up wine. I'm getting there. On day 3!

Congrats on day 3! I have no doubt that you can do this and slay this dragon as well as you did with smoking!
(PS - Congrats also on being a Respiratory Therapist! And - again - on the 10 years smoke free!)
