Congrats on your decision, and welcome!  You've found the best support group on the web!  We've got people in all stages of quitting and we can help you!

My advice -- read, read, read. The better you understand this addiction and the mind games that go along with it, the better equipped you will be to defeat it.  Here are the two resources many of our members have found absolutely vital to quitting:

We're here for you! You can DO THIS!

hi heather,

have you tried before?

started back?

are you willing to give it 4 full months without a puff if you will be free?

that's what it's going to take.

we will help in every way but you must learn and help yourself and not back down.

Yes I have tried about 6 times in the 28 years I have been smoking.  The longest I have quit is 2 years.  I started back when I moved in with someone who smoked 3 packs a day.  I broke down and started up again.  I got so frustrated at myself.

Thank you Sarah for your advice!  I will read, read, read!  What are the best groups on here to participate in, on here?

JonesCarpeDiem

you've smoked a long time just as i and many here have. its not magic.

the desire to smoke doesn't go away in a week.

and you can always start back up if you so choose.

so, are you willing to be uncomfortable for a month and then guard against

sneak attacks for another three full months after that month?

you have to promise yourself that much time and stick to it.

Hey there! Me again - I just came from you page.

I'm sure that there are more of us that can relate to your frustration than not.  Because you mentioned numerous quit attempts, here is a link from a great website that speaks about how to keep from relapsing.

http://www.whyquit.com/whyquit/A_FreeRelapseInsurance.html As you can see it comes from the website, Whyquit.com. I'm thinking it might be helpful to read that before you read anything else and then take it from there!  Here is the link to the other site mentioned by Sarah.

Obviously we are all saying that education is key to success. You already want to quit. Read read and read some more - learn about the addiction. You have plenty of time between now and your quit date. Put together a quit kit. Include a list of reasons why you are quitting, some sugar free gum, sugar free hard candies and/or lollipops. Plans for what you'll due as soon a crave or bad urge kicks in. Call a buddy change up your environment, take a walk - stuff like that. It helps to have these thing written down so you can access them quickly in time of need. the point there is to divert you attention away from yourself and the crave.

Stick close to the blogs. You'll learn so much and even make some friends in the process. That sounds strange but you will. Wishing you all the best. Sending up prayers for your sister and family. Sorry this is so long.

honestly, most of us hang out here in the blogs. Check out the groups, there are a few active ones, but most of the day to day support happens right here. You can also leave messages on people's pages, or send private messages (emails) to other members on the site.

Heather, welcome!

I can sure relate to you. I quit several times, just to start back up. Finally this time I have my forever quit.

I realized that it all boils down to really wanting to quit, and not viewing it like you are giving something up. Quitting smoking is gaining back your life, saying no to death by smoking and saying yes to life by quitting. When you look at it that way you shouldn't feel like you are fighting it, as much as embracing it.

It's quite a journey. But you have found a great site to learn and receive support. Learn all you can. Stay close and visit often!

Hi Quiter, yes we are:)

Hey everyone, gues what I did tonight?  I told all who are friends with me which is over 200 people, that I am quiting smoking!  And you wouldn't beleive all the response I have gotten already, just in one hour from my friends!  Every single one is very supportive, and every single one that has responded to me are ex smokers.  They have said to me they are there for me if I need them!  I am just overwhelmed with all the support of folks I don't know and the folks I do know.  NOW I KNOW I can quit for good!  And that will be April 7th!

Maybe this video will help you to quit. It certainly did for me. I can't get this out of my head. Everytime I get an urge to smoke I think about this video. No way no how am I gonna take a puff at least for today. One day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.....

Cut and paste this in a new browser window:
