How to Quit JUUL (or vaping in general)

I smoked cigarettes for over 40 years, then I used Juul before quitting forever on Christmas Day, 2017.

I'm going to describe how I quit Juul, because I think it can be harder than quitting cigarettes.  Here's why:

  • Juul is DELICIOUS. That's a fact. Those vaping juices are mouth-wateringly wonderful.
  • Vaping doesn't stink like cigarette smoke.
  • Juul goes anywhere and can be used anywhere without ashtrays or garbage.
  • You really don't know how much nicotine you're getting. But it's a lot more than you think.

When I decided to quit smoking, I transitioned to Juul instead of another nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) like a patch or gum or whatever.  I formulated a plan in my mind ahead of time, and it went something like this:

  • Buy the vaping stuff ahead of time and put it all aside. I bought a HUGE amount of Juul pods plus the equipment.
  • Use up all the cigarettes I still had first (half a carton at the time).
  • Once that's done, throw out all the ashtrays and lighters everywhere (car included).
  • Start using Juul pods. It worked out to one per day for me, which is about the equivalent of a pack.
  • CLEAN THE HOUSE
  • Develop a hobby of some sort. Mine was crocheting blankets.
  • Don't worry about a quit date. Just happily use the Juul pods as long as they last.
  • When there were about 5 pods left, I bought things like Tootsie Pops and Twizzlers (or straws to chew on). I also bought Nicotine lozenges, but discovered they are NASTY and threw them out. Ugh.
  • When all the Juul pods were used up, I threw out EVERY. SINGLE. THING.  That includes chargers and empty pods. Everything went out. Gone. Don't look back.

I experienced severe withdrawal, including dizziness, sleepiness, depression, and intense cravings.  I found this site a couple weeks after I quit, which was a miracle.  Coming here to talk about all that really helped me through it. Plus it gave me a way to be accountable to people I came to care about.

  • NOPE = Not another puff ever
  • I don't do that anymore
  • NMW = No matter what
  • #DOF = Number of Days of Freedom

After the physical cravings were over, I had what I called "memory" cravings. We talk about that here as triggers. Smoking and vaping are intertwined in everything we've been doing in our lives for a long time. So now it's time to relearn those things without smoking. That part is different for everyone.  That's pretty much the stuff we always talk about.

It will be hard. That's another fact. But it won't be hard forever. And when it's not hard anymore, you're free.  So every single time I get a little twinge of a memory crave, like seeing those ads on TV now for gods sake, I remind myself that I'm FREE and I never want to be a slave to nicotine ever again.

Anyone here who would like to talk about Juul or vaping can either comment here or message me directly.

I hope I can contribute more this way.

Vaping is mostly different in that it tastes so good and it doesn't feel bad. There's less there to work with in wanting to quit.

Good to see you Annette....missed you! This is great information and interesting. I know nothing about vaping or juul, so hard to help people who ask. Hope all is well with you.

Hi, Annette!  I never vaped but really liked reading this blog post.  All such good information about how you did it, what withdrawal is like and the journey after that.  You are such a good writer; clear and to the point!  I'm sure this will help many people.

And I agree with you wholeheartedly about EX and how important it was to my own quit.

Good to "see" you!

I use to smoke cigarettes and quit for 19 years and one night a year ago I tried the juul and it is all over from there. Over the last two weeks and all the scary articles I have read lately I have drastically cut down but just can’t bring myself to quit. It makes me feel terrible, my heart races, and the worst part is I realize it does this and still can’t stop!!! My quit date is 9/23 and I am scared that like all my other quit days I will fail. Quitting cigarettes wasn’t even this hard....

FreedomfromNic

Dallas10, you are way stronger than you are giving yourself credit for. You quit for 19 years! For me quitting cigarettes felt much harder. The cravings after juul are somewhere gentler - the pass by quicker and I dont get anxious like if did with cigarettes. Don’t be afraid - just do it!!!

I'm glad you're here, and welcome! No need to be scared, but I get it. And no need to fail. Coming here every day WILL help, believe me.  Find all the tips you can ahead of time and commit to using them.

I just ran out of juul pods and am thinking of transitioning to nicotine patches for a few weeks and then stopping completely. Does that sound like a good plan? I really want to succeed this time. Congratulations, by the way

Quit date is 9/21 and I know cravings will be intense by day 3 or is it longer? I use the Juul of course and it assisted me in stopping cigs but now I vape allll the time.

Just want to see if I should quit that Friday after work? I don't want to go to work irritated. I'm a therapist and my job is stressful

This site can make all the difference, truly.  Annette AnnetteMM and I quit around the same time and our journeys are quite different, yet the comraderie of someone with just around the same amount of days, PLUS all the wisdom, strength and hope from all the elders here plus all the information just waiting to be tapped and bookmarked and reread when you need to, well, it's like a treasure chest, a GIFT...and the relationships you build here can help you succeed.  At least that is part of my FINALLY FOREVER QUIT.

So sorry I never saw your comment/question! The site is having problems. Anyway, how did you do? I did not use patches, so I can't give an opinion about them.

It's different for everyone, so that makes it really hard to plan.  Try https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex/blog/2018/01/04/early-withdrawal-symptoms?sr=se... and other posts about it.

I'm just pulling out of a depression and already struggle with sleep and other things. I'm not looking fwd to that part of withdrawal

The key is to plan for it. It's not as bad as you fear. Quitting on the weekend has its pros and cons. On the one hand, symptoms. On the other hand, no routine.  I assume you don't smoke or vape at work, only on breaks, so when you're working you aren't thinking about it, right? What is your routine on the weekend? Can you keep yourself busy and distracted enough to avoid going to the store?

on no I do think about when can I have a break  bc I just want to get out of the building

Thank you for that post! I stumbled on this site and thank God it’s here! For many years I used to smoke a few cigarettes a day....1 or 2....I was able to do that for years but always wanted to eliminate those few cigarettes. About 5 or 6 years ago I heard about electronic cigarettes and I thought that I would finally give up “smokes” with an ecig...no smoke, no smell, no ashes...just odorless vapor. So I started vaping and very quickly I was out of control vaping all the time. All day at work I would vape especially if I was feeling stressed. I’ve reached a point where enough is enough! I knew on my heart that the only thing I should be putting in my lungs is AIR but I convinced myself that ecig vapor had to be way better than smoke. But the amount of my vaping became exponentially more than what I ever smoked. Every now and then I would “blood” from popped blood vessels in my eyes...(and yes I’m getting them checked)...but I know it’s from vaping....periodically I would stop vaping and my eyes would clear up...and then when I would start again my eyes would become severely blood shot again. I was at work yesterday working on a stressful project and I was vaping all day —-insane! Insane to think that my productivity is somehow enhanced by sucking on an electronic cigarette! Anyway I’m done with ecigs. Just started Alan Carr’s book —-but I’m ready to be done once and for all. Thank you again.  I just found this site, but thank goodness it’s here. I thank you all for the collective support...it’s hugely GREAT! I’m very grateful.

I'm so glad you found us! You did the same thing I did with the whole "it's better than smoking" thing and then wait...nicotine BAD, air Good.  Stick with this site, for sure. I couldn't have done it without all these great people.

Even today I got a call from a difficult client...and during that call I felt my stress rising and I started thinking I wish I had an ecig....but you you know what?....I’m not gonna do it...I’m not gonna keep killing myself because I feel stressed ....bc the ecig is not going to reduce or cure or eliminate the stress....it’s just absurd destructive behavior. I did it for too long...I’m done....and I thank you and everyone on this site for their support.

Thank you for posting this! I came on here hoping to find other ppls quit stories, mid journey or further down the road, and it has been difficult, but your inspiring post about the details of how you quit seems to be the place to find the ex and soon to be ex vapers.

What a terrific post.  So, refreshing to hear from someone who made a decision and stuck with it heck or high water.   That's really all it takes in life be it smoking or any of life's other challenges.  You are to be commended.

Please look up and read Alan Carr's book The Easy Way to Quit (I hope I remembered the title right), which will explain why cutting down on nicotine is not usually successful. It usually creates more withdrawal symptoms. Definitely have a plan for when you quit nicotine entirely.

@AnnetteMM thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness in doing this blog. I thought I had everything thrown away and I keep running into my Vapes and then I don't have the strength to throw it away I always puff it. I think they're all gone now and I hate the withdrawals more than anything I know that they will go away though because I read this site and everyone says so and I can't believe that you would say it if it weren't true! But right now it doesn't feel good I just wish I could take one Puff to make it all better but I know it won't be all better. So I'm staying smoke for you today. Maybe I'll smoke tomorrow but not today.

@Debiam I understand. I found that keeping my mind and my hands busy were the most important thing. And having a little bit of sugar when it seemed too hard. I'm still free after almost 5 years now, and believe me it's worth it. Thank you for your kind words. You can do this!
