Goodbye to my best friend

Today I said goodbye to you once and for all.  You have been my partner in crime for 33 years now and you have always seemed to be there for me.  Although we've had several fights and break-ups before; this time I'm just simply tired of you and your weaseling ways.  You never let me go to a walk-in movie EVER.  You steal my money and leave my car dirty and stinky.  I am embarrassed by you and never introduce you to any of my clients.  I can't even enjoy one single dinner with my family and friends without you rushing me out the door so we can be "alone."  I've spent so much time trying to cover up the fact that I even know you; I'm always applying scented lotions to my hands and eating breath mints to cover up your stinky smell.  Remember last Christmas when we made the whole family wait to open presents until we went outside to "talk."  Well, I'm tired of all this so consider this our final goodbye.  We once were so close but now I'm moving on with different friends.  Friends that like going to the indoor movies, that won't rush me outside after where done eating.  You know what?  They never ask me for money and when I'm with them I'm no longer out of breath.  Like I used to get when we would hang out.  Please stay away from me and I will stay away from you.  I know I will see you around but this time I'm gonna stay my distance.  Goodbye my old friend.  This time you we not be missed.

Remember, too, that this "friend" was slowly but surely poisoning you to death.  This was no friend - just a pretend one!

Goodbye, farewell, let the door hit you in the butt on your way out!

Hi Angie

You have told MY smoking story.  Except I smoked and did all of that sneaky stuff for 63 yrs.

I don't feel like a loser anymore.

Good job, just let go and don't look back. Your life is going to get so much better now that you ditched that "friend"!

I am new to the Excommunity with my quit date Aug.4. Angie..just wanted you to know I have felt the same for the last 35 yrs. It's like a shameful secret you live with many times a day.  I hope I will be strong to get rid of this crappy friend once and for all like you.

Thanks so much for your support and thoughts.  Yes, my EX "best friend" was my biggest secret.  At my last job they didn't know I smoked, well at least I thought they didn't know ( they did ).  Keep reading everything here!  If your reading about quitting smoking constantly I find it takes my urges away or least keeps me distracted till it passes.

Good luck on your quit!  Are you using anything to help you stop smoking?  Let's keep in touch!  The constant contact with everyone here is so important to my quit.  Keep posting, keep reading, and keep a positive attitude. Your QUIT can be as easy or hard as YOU want it to be.  Keeping positive and know the cravings will pass, just do anything else till the cravings go away. I mopped the floor twice today!  I know you can do this!  Angie

Thank you so much for your post!  I've dreamed of writing that goodbye letter for years!  12 hours nicotine free and counting.

Great job for calling out nicotine for the false friend he is. Any relationship with Nic is an abusive one. I'm glad you are getting out before the damage he's done to your body and to your psyche can't be undone.  It sounds like you are doing everything right to ensure that this breakup is permanent - Yeah!

Good bye to your worst enemy who was trying to undermine you in every possible way...NOW you are free to grow.  Think of that freedom as being cool, refreshing air, and the sounds you make like best, birds singing, waves crashing, babies laughing...it's all there for you.

XO,

Ellen
